Id rather not waste picks on McNabb and build the team thru the draft and get better with each pick.
McNabb is a quick fix and not a long term answer, he is 33 and on the downside of his career. Rather let Alex and David Carr try and take us, now of course its a debate to have, i like both, not sure either is the answer. But rather we give our guys a chance.
I'm not saying we should get McNabb, but what wrong with a "quick fix" if we can be legit contenders for the next 3 to 4 years with McNabb while we develop a young player behind him? I'll tell you what the mental block is for a lot of you, Alex Smith. Most people dont want McNabb because that would mean Smith's time is officially over as a Niner. A lot of us, myself included, have a lot emotionally invested in Smith. The thought of him going somewhere else and becoming something is more than most can bare. The funny thing is, if Smith just does ok or is just good next year, what do we do then? Obviously if he sucks we cut him. If he's great and we go deep into the playoffs we sign him. But, what if we just see more of the same? What does that contract look like if any? Is Carr the answer? Do we take a chance with another rookie? More importantly, will guys like Vernon and Willis want to resign if it looks like we haven't turned the corner? I can almost gaureentee signing McNabb would make signing the above mentioned that much easier. Besides, who's to say not signing McNabb gives a better chance of having a quality starter for the next decade? If anything, McNabb gives us a chance to groom the next starter so he is prepared for the next decade. Again, just some thoughts.
BTW, signing a few free agents doesn't mean we aren't building through the draft. Unless your definition of building through the draft means no more than 2 or 3 starters are FA. If it is, I would say good luck and have fun watching another decade of subpar football.
P.S : Quick Fix = 1 year wonder. Two to four years in the NFL is a solid contribution and longer than the average shelf life of an NFL player.
