The Rams are reportedly "seriously considering" placing the lowest possible tender on restricted free agent FS O.J. Atogwe.
The tender is called "right of first refusal," and would allow St. Louis to match any offer sheet Atogwe receives, but give the team no draft pick in return. The designation would also cost the Rams $5.75 million less than giving Atogwe a typically mandated 10-percent raise on his 2009 salary ($6.976 million). It could also create a lot of bad blood between the team and player. Mar. 4 - 12:12 am et

That would be great if they did that. It's win win for us if they do. Apart from just creating a rift between him and the team it also gives us an opportunity to mess with the Rams.
If we make him a high, but still manageable, offer then either he becomes a niner (niner win!) or the Rams have to pay that much more to keep their guy (rams fail!). Either way it hurts the Rams.

If they give him anything higher they have to give him a 10% pay raise. He was franchised last year so that means the Rams would have to pay him close to $7 million to keep him around.
Since they're keeping the right of first refusal they can match any offer that comes along and retain his services. They're hoping that his services won't be in high demand so that they can pay him less and still have him around.
The Niners need to make a serious play for him.

Couldn't any team in the league just poison pill them, and make it impossible for them to resign him?

Very intriguing possibility ... RT @toddniemeyer Do you see 49ers making play for OJ Atogwe? Rams aren't looking for any compensation.

Could be a nice pickup. I think he is overrated for sure though.

We probably won't make a move for him but if you're Atogwe do you want to play for your girlfriends father? Jill goes to school at the academy of art in sf, if he plays for the 49ers then they're closer

From Singletary's point of view, he probably wants Atogwe to sign where he can get the most money. The more money he makes the more money his daughter and their potential grandchildren will have.
