49ers 2019 Training Camp: Jalen Hurd’s scuffles highlight the practice report roundup for July 28

The San Francisco 49ers have completed their second of 11 training camp practices from Santa Clara. Sunday's session lasted about an hour and 45 minutes.

Quick Notes

It was rookie offensive lineman Ross Reynolds' turn to get the crowd of fans excited for the start of practice. He did so with a couple of cartwheels.

Rookie wide receiver Jalen Hurd got into a couple of in-practice scuffles. The first was with cornerback Dontae Johnson, per Matt Barrows of The Athletic, and the second with safety Antone Exum, again, per Barrows. Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that Hurd punched Johnson twice in the midsection in the first instance.

"I don't like guys fighting in practice," Shanahan said on Sunday. "I don't like punches thrown. I like guys pissing each other off. I like guys competing. But I think real toughness is controlling that because you're going to get penalties in the game and things like that [...] Guys don't have to prove that they're tough by fighting people. If you're not tough, we're going to know that, so are the players, you're not going to be on this team, so that is a very silly way to prove it, especially when you have helmets on."

Injuries

Guard Joshua Garnett suffered a dislocated finger during practice on Saturday. He did not practice on Sunday.

"He did that yesterday; they popped it back in," Shanahan said. "He came out today, and it popped back out, so he had to leave practice. We'll be taking a look at that."

Rookie running back Austin Walter appeared to tweak his left hamstring in warmups.

Cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon intercepted a Garoppolo pass intended for wide receiver Dante Pettis. D.J. Reed continues to get reps at outside cornerback. Cornerback Richard Sherman looked good covering wide receiver Jordan Matthews and broke up a Garoppolo-thrown pass. Running backs Tevin Coleman and Matt Breida looked "explosive."
