San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle has consistently targeted a Week 1 return as he recovers from the Achilles injury he suffered during the team's playoff victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.
When the injury occurred, many assumed Kittle's recovery would extend into the 2026 season. However, optimism increased after learning that the injury was not as severe as initially feared, leaving the door open for a quicker return.
Kittle remains firmly on track to achieve his goal of being on the field when the 49ers open the season against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia.
"My Achilles is doing great, no setbacks in my recovery," Kittle said on Wednesday. "Checking all the boxes, doing everything I'm supposed to do. My surgeon's super happy. My physical therapist in L.A., who works with him, is super happy. Niners are happy. I'm happy."
Kittle acknowledged that being available for Week 1 remains a realistic goal.
"Even when I had the surgery, and [Dr. Neal] ElAttrache told me, he said, 'Hey, I think if you do everything the right way, you have a chance,'" Kittle said. "I mean, it definitely ignites something and makes you push for it. So, we're on track, we're ahead of schedule."
A lengthy flight for that Week 1 matchup in Australia complicates matters. It's not the ideal situation for a player returning from a significant injury.
"Just another challenge. That's all it is," Kittle said.
When asked how a roughly 16-hour flight might impact his recovery, Kittle admitted he has no frame of reference.
"Couldn't tell you," he said. "I've never done it."
Still, Kittle noted that extensive travel is nothing new for the 49ers, who routinely rank among the NFL's most-traveled teams.
"Our average flight's 5 or 6 hours," Kittle said. "So, to me, it is what it is. We're going to work. It's an awesome opportunity to play in Australia. It'll be a really fun plane ride home if we win. That's our goal, go over there, play in front of an awesome crowd, huge stadium, 110,000 people. It sounds sick to me. Might as well just take advantage of it."
For now, the most encouraging news for the 49ers is that Kittle's recovery continues to progress without setbacks, increasing the chances that the tight end will have an impactful 2026 season.
