The San Francisco 49ers are counting on their biggest free-agent addition, veteran wide receiver Mike Evans, to continue being one of the NFL's most dangerous red-zone threats. If he can replicate the production he enjoyed during his lengthy tenure with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, it should provide a significant boost to quarterback Brock Purdy and the 49ers offense.
Speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Evans credited much of his past red-zone success to his size and athleticism. The veteran receiver stands 6-foot-5 and weighs more than 230 pounds, giving him a natural advantage over many defensive backs.
"You've got to win in tight situations down there in the red zone," Evans said. "And I have the leaping ability, I have the awareness, and a lot of reps at doing it. And I love getting in that red area and adding a different dynamic to this team."
Evans showcased some of those traits during Wednesday's practice, the second and final organized team activities (OTA) session open to the media.
"I just pride myself on getting in the end zone, winning versus bad leverage, and one-on-one opportunities," Evans said. "I've got to get open for Brock."
The veteran receiver has also been impressed by Purdy since arriving in Santa Clara, noting that the quarterback played a major role in his decision to join the 49ers.
"Love Brock," Evans said. "He's a big reason why I came here. ... Throws a really great ball. I'm getting the timing down with him now. Super smart. He's about his business, too. Comes to work every single day.
"He's a quiet guy, but me and him talk about not just football, but life, and really cool guy. I look forward to having a great connection with him this year."
As he prepares for another NFL training camp and the 2026 season, Evans says his goals remain unchanged.
"I just want to continue to do what I've been doing my whole career, and that's making plays, being the ultimate team player, and the ultimate playmaker," Evans said. "That's what I really want. And just let these guys know not to take this s--t for granted because you never know what could happen.
"And our roster is a great roster. We stack up with the best of the best in the league, so just not taking these opportunities for granted."
