I don't think it's fair that you only commented on part of my quote. My point was that a QB can have a 75 completion percentage but if the balls are always off, which WAS the case for Alex Smith, then it adds up to a lot of lost yardage and trust from the receivers.

Smith has done well in these last two games in what I consider almost perfect ball placement.

The bold means that if a QB continuously puts a receiver in harms way or the receiver repeatedly must make difficult catches exposing himself in situations where the throw and catch should have been routine and easy, then the receiver begins to think in the back of his mind if every throw is going to put him in a bad situation. Loss of focus begins to set in due to the loss of trust. Rice and Taylor would fly through the middle on slants because they knew Joe would put them in a perfect spot more times than not.

It is a picky gripe considering the progress made but the progress seems to have been made so it's time to look at what needs improvement from here on.

well, I hate Smith's results, I don't hate Smith the person. I hate having had our team languish since 2005.

Now you have to start calling NFL experts like Clayton and Razzano haters too, that's the problem.

Completion percentage does not necessarily equate to accuracy. Alex Smith was a check down QB last year and completed a lot of balls to Frank Gore whereas McNabb threw much more deep balls and threw deeper routes or more often to his receivers. You must take into account where the ball lands when it's being thrown to a receiver or if it's a 0-6 yard throw or further. As I recall, Smith's yards per completion wasn't much higher than Shaun Hill's meaning he was completing a lot of shorter routes which equates to higher percentage.

I call it like it is and most of the guys here understand that what Smith put on paper last year wasn't a very good representation of what we actually saw on the field. Yes, he played better than he ever had but it wasn't all that great in terms of NFL QB standards and outcomes of the plays, especially during critical times when we really needed an extended drive be it the 2nd quarter or 4th quarter.

Accuracy is pass completion %, it has nothing to do with distance the pass traveled, only with it being caught. He led quite a few TD drives in the second half last year, we were also one of the top red zone offenses in all of the NFL.

Listen to what Fitz has to say. You need to get separation from the person that's guarding you. I don't think we had a DeSean Jackson type WR that could do this last year nor the protection to allow our WR's to make double moves to get open downfield like McNabb had. Do we have that this year? It looks like it. Everything looks to be in place to where we can start either being a great football team or start over at the QB position.

Yes it is too much to ask when your QB is inconsistent on where he puts the ball. In front, behind, too high, too low, on the numbers, on the face mask, jump ball, dive for it, etc... Now if the QB was placing 80% of the balls in a good spot then it wouldn't be too much to ask IMO...
