I will say if any front office can make Revis work without it seriously impacting our abilities to sign players it's ours.
We're probably the best in the league when it comes to using creative contract language and playing with the cap.
All the players really care about is the guaranteed money since they all know they'll never see the end of a contract as is without it being restructured or just flat out being released. So the number of years and the total is ultimately just fluff to jack up that guaranteed money amount.
With that said Revis wanting 16 million per is just him really wanting a heck of a lot of guaranteed money not that he absolutely has to have 16 million every year. So I'm sure if you get creative with the language like with incentives and playing the game of front loading and back loading money you can make the deal work and have both sides be happy.

Skip Bayless yesterday "The 49ers should give up their 1, 2, 2, 3, 3 for Revis."
Screw that. Even uninjured Revis ain't worth that. Only Mangini made sense by saying his ACL is the unknown and his contract demands is a huge cap hit.

Not so fast on 49ers' and #Jets CB Darrelle Revis. High-ranking team source says 49ers' interest is ".001 on a scale of 1-10."

Like you said and many others, for football players it's the guaranteed money that's most important.

The NY article says the teams want to agree to the parameters of a long term contract as part of the deal. I wouldn't give up anything higher than a 3rd. I'd give a 4th and 5th this year and a conditional 3rd next. A reasonable long term deal with a no holdout clause is a must.

I like Skip Bayless but HHHHHHHHHHHHHEEEEEEEECCCCCKKKKKKKK No I wouldn't give more than a 3rd rounder. I know when healthy Revis is Elite and the best but who knows how healthy he is and will be and if its just a year rental is not worth more than 1 pick. Give the Jets our #93 3rd rounder and no more for Revis or count me out.

How are they going to pay him and still lock up Crabtree, A. Davis, Iupati, and Kaep in the next 2 years? I just don't see it. They had interest in Nnamdi a couple of years ago. He's getting cut as early as today and he would be a lot cheaper. The 49ers just don't do things like this. They lock up their own players. I'm not saying it's impossible I just seriously doubt it. Media people see the 49ers have all these picks and assume they are a good fit because of it.

He's GOT to be messing around. Nobody in their right mind would give up that much...ever.
I'm with you. Our 3rd this year and a conditional mid-level pick next year; similar to Alex Smith...a QB!
As to his contract, we can shore up the parameters to restructure his contract to bump him up THIS year...from 6 to say, in the 9-11M for the next 3 years and like you say, provide a higher guarantee up front. Add in a low cap hit but build in escalators and de-escalators based on performance and health and minutes played (e.g. see Brooks contract). I think this is very realistic b/c Revis wants to play for us. It could be a win-win for everyone. The Jets will get something for him and need to get those picks NOW, Revis gets a good contract with guaranteed upfront money and gets to play for a Superbowl team for the next three years going into a new stadium (plus he gets to play Sherman x2 a year) and feels wanted in SF and we get a shutdown CB allowing us to focus on the other two S positions and LCB and slot CB position.
IF this is doable, this is a no-brainer and it won't inhibit us from signing CK, Crabtree, Iupati, etc. We also have quite a few expensive players who could be cut (Rogers, Whitner, Goodwin, Manningham, etc.) for younger guys who've been training for at least a full year.

Posturing. We show early/initial interest. Revis gets interested. Jets FO high-ball it. Leak Falcons interest/trade rumors are cemented in the media. We back off publicly now. Watch what happens next...

RT @AlbertBreer: My understanding is that the Niners aren't talking with the Jets on Revis. At least not now. SF source: "We're not in it."

A reporter that covers the Falcons posted this
D. Orlando Ledbetter @AJCFalcons Don't get too worked up about the Revis report. #Falcons freed up cash for their free agents. Jets trying to leverage 49ers with leak.
Somebody's trying to build the market for Revis. There is smoke but no fire.

Told that the #49ers haven't even discussed a trade for Darrelle Revis with the Jets. Team was preoccupied with other trade matters.
