Smith is gone and I can't foresee any scenario where he would remain with the team. He's good enough to start on half of the teams in the NFL right now. He needs to be traded for the highest pick available so we can have to space to resign Goldson. As for a backup, yes it is very important to have a quality backup for CK. That's where Tolzien comes in. Or even another QB. I have full confidence in Jim Harbaugh's ability to find a good QB. And not to knock Smith, but I think we can find a guy that can be coached up to do what Alex Smith does should CK ever get hurt. That is complete a high percentage of passes, make smart decisions, and not turn the ball over. And we won't have to pay that guy 8 million to do it. This is coming from an Alex Smith fan BTW. Looks like we will get a real good look at Tolzien now if he does become the number 2.

isn't it incredibly obvious that he would be a great backup for us? I don't understand why this is such a revelation for you or anyone else. It's not going to happen though. He is going to get traded for a 5th rounder to some bottom dweller in the league, where he will be an upgrade over some bust they have at QB. Jets, Jaguars, Cardinals, etc. Of course it would be great to have him as a backup, esp since Kaep puts his body at risk with QB runs, but Smith, after 5 years of killing coaches and losing games, has finally proved himself to be good enough to start in this league. It just won't be for a team like us that has a legit QB at the helm.

Totally. But for Alex himself, he deserves to be a starter/winner/leader somewhere else. For us as a team, I hope we get him a ring this year and he stays for CK7 and this team/organization and works his way up to a coaching position ala Rathman and many others.

PS: And you're VERY right. It's just a matter of time before he goes RGIII which is why I was very encouraged with the last month of the season where we ran less "Q" offense and focused on pocket passing more. Just needs to continue to work on his pre snap reads (coverages and esp. run call alignments), intermediate "touch" passes (needs to lay off the speed balls) and his deep touch and timing with receivers such as Moss, VD and others. Love his moxie!

I've noticed that Roman and Harbaugh will go hot and cold with things often so I can see the this part of the game disappearing at times and come back and kick the bajesus out of a team. I was encouraged to see Kaep slide or go out of bounds on most of his runs.

I'm pretty sure Alex will leave, but I do think Baalke and Harbaugh will make a strong push to keep him around I just don't think we can offer him what he'll want.

I posted for years with posters on this forum on the old mercury news forum in the 90s, then on the Original webzone and for the last 7 years on this webzone, with out a single warning. I compare two 49er players at the same position...on a sports forum and...poof a warning.

Every water cooler in the 49er nation is talking about Smith and the other guy..... except at the forum we have spent the last 10 seasons posting at.

It wasn't a revelation that Alex is a good QB always believed that and believed in him. It was more about Kaep turning up his running another notch. He transcended mobile QB into running QB last night. Not that he's a run first QB obviously but that it's something that can become heavy in the game plan from time to time and thus chances of something unfortunate also rises.

Before, I don't think you could find one analyst that put him in the same catagory as a Cam or RGIII, but that's what he did last night he got part membership into their club. He also got part membership in the pocket passer club too and I think probably has a honorary membership in Alex Smith club of management.

So in finale, it was a realization that a backup QB is a necessity and who better for JH than Alex. See what I realized that was Alex had more benefit to us than to be traded by us.

there is no way we get a 2nd round pick for Alex. The teams that want Alex are bottom dwellers that know they will have first dibs when he is undoubtedly released. Therefore, why trade when you can pick up leftovers from the street? The most any team will give is a 5th rounder, and Baalke is going to take that to the bank. That's about where he should have been drafted in the first place, so it works out alright in the end.

Known kaeper-backer here...just want to state that Alex does deserve a chance to start on another team....Ive watched Alex play every sunday for the better part of a decade...ive been calling for his head after about year 3 or so, but...with Harbaugh, Alex has improved a ton!!! Kaep is the BEST QB on our team FACT!!! But...Alex is not damaged goods..he can play very well still, and could go to a team loaded with talent (Eagles) and do GREAT things!!!! personally I will be watching him play wherever he goes!!!
