Just my opinion, but I think this guy's role on the team is as an emergency backup for Frank Gore. Frank Gore is absolutely vital to this offense, which is built to dominate with the run and control the line of scrimmage. We don't want to suddenly find ourselves deep in a playoff run and see it get sidetracked because Frank Gore gets hurt. He is that important to how our team is built.
If Gore goes down, Kendall Hunter does not step up into that downhill runner, smash-mouth role. He is a different, smaller, faster kind of player. He is the cornerback to Gore's Strong Safety. Kendall is lightning, Gore is thunder, Jacobs is backup thunder. He is also Heavy Thunder, a short yardage specialist. Dixon is backup lightning.
It's unusual to have a starting caliber halfback like Jacobs as your backup. I think you only do that if you absolutely know the Championship is a definite possibility for you. And it definitely is for us. That's why we have the lowest cap space in the league. Our coaches, front office, and ownership wants to win this thing NOW. This year. Look how close we were last year. We're even better today. You don't take a flyer on a veteran like Randy Moss if you're rebuilding. You absolutely go for it when you know you're one of the top 4 to 6 teams in the league and absolutely have a chance at winning the Super Bowl.
With the new stadium licenses for sale, with such an excellent all-around talent pool on both sides of the pool, this team is built to win a Championship immediately. Last year got away. Next year might be possible, but it's less likely than this year. Our focus is to win NOW.
Nobody forced Jacobs to sign the contract. If anything, he should be grateful he gets an extra year in his career that so far has been a great sabbatical for him. But as for his tweets, he's a professional athlete, of course he wants to play. I'd be worried about him if he was NOT lobbying, trying to get on the field somehow.
But imagine worse case scenario: Gore goes out and Jacobs steps in. Now he is angry, he has something to prove, he'll show you he's good enough.
I am not worried about this one.

Dixon is the backup to the #2 Halfback. He's the guy on the roster. What do you want me to say, cut him? If they had found a better option, they would have replaced him. Yes, there is a rookie but they seem determined to redshirt him. It doesn't invalidate the rest of the argument, which is Jacobs is there as Gore's backup.
Originally posted by Young2Rice:dixon is to slow on special teams, the loss of two studs from last year and the play of dixon is the main reason why our coverage has been horrid,, in regards to his running,, he runs vs the other teams second and third defense, hardly a ringing endorsement in my opinion. back up lightening is pretty funny. sorry but it is

Dixon can play special teams and he has been running better lately.

He complained earlier in the year, had a chat with JH and was quiet. How he tweets, will likely have another chat with JH and then...? If he is a locker room cancer he will be gone. If he is working hard and will be ready if needed...no problem. If he gave the game plan to NY...use him for misinformation in the playoffs. Cue the music for Secret Agent Man! Or should it be The Prisoner?

I don't understand coaches who let players rot on the bench and not even play in garbage time. It hurts a guy's morale to practice all week and then not see the field on Sunday. When we are up big late there shouldn't be starter on the field.

you have to be active first......but seriously I do hate when Hunter is out there when the game is obviously over.
