Justin Smith Contract Named One Of The Best In NFL

I recall this contract was after he was still under the radar and SF fans were saying things like "this guy better be good"

"The San Franciso 49ers signed defensive end Justin Smith to a six-year, $45 million contract that included $20 million in guarantees."

Again, no comparison to Alex's measly QB contract with very little security.

Yup. Ridiculous comparison. Not even close to the same circumstances.

So, about 3.3 million guaranteed per year? How much of Alex's contract is guaranteed?

I think this is a thread full of good humor and perspective check!

20 million guarantee money pretty much gives a player anywhere from 3-5 years of job security whether he is traded or not. Alex, really has only 1-2 years of security considering he was really a $9 mil investment.

Ladies and gentlemen....the hypocrisy of WZ.

Its only inciting if you agree with the message. OP is comparing apples to oranges.

...and if you take the clearly tongue-in-cheek comments as offensive. Much different then, for example, name calling, telling others they are stupid, ignorant, etc.

wow, 6M and 8M are low salaries compared to Peppers, Cambell, etc.. But still thats good money for him, but I hope he is extended, lower base salary to give us extra cap room.
Justin Smith just wants to kill QBs. That is all.
Whereas the 49ers have one of the best (most favorable for the team) contracts in Justin's, the Redskins have two of the worst contracts, way, way overpaid, and the Jets have THREE of the ten worst contracts. You want to talke about team killers? Well, one contract way out of whack is tough on a team. Two is not really manageable. Three is a disaster. Look for the Jets and SKins to get poleaxed this yr. and on into the future due to this huge overpayment of 2 and 3 players. When you do that you take away from the total value of the team. We on the other hand have a tremendous deal in the other direction. To be fair, we should, out of fairness, pay Justin more, which is what he deserves. Not break the bank but pay him more. He deserves it in spades.

Smith has financial security in his contract...not sure where you are drawing that line? I'm not sure how much Alex is guaranteed compared to Justin...do you?

By guaranteed I mean really guaranteed, not guaranteed if not cut.

Looked up Alex Smith's contract and it seems fairly ideal for both sides--

2012: $9 million guaranteed (counting roster bonus and easy incentives, not including difficult incentives). If injured guaranteed--$10.5 million.
2013: $8.5 guaranteed if not cut ($7.5 million base, $1 million roster bonus, 1.25 easy incentives, 1.75 difficult incentives)
2014: Similar to 2013.

So a raise from 2011 ($5.9 million) of $3.1 million--pretty good raise.

If the contract is maintained for three years $16 million is guaranteed. Seems fair to both sides and certainly not a slight. There are some contradictory reports as to guarantees for year two and year three. Not sure how that works.

Edit: Justin Smith's contract was considered very good when he signed it and he is guaranteed about $6.75 this coming year.

I want to meet Justin Smith. Hes turning into one of my favorite Niners of all time. And thats saying a lot since its the offseason. I love how hes getting the recognition that he deserves, but at the same time, he himself is just so passionate about the team coming together for a run at the CHAMPIONSHIP. And all he does is get to work every day and continue to better himself--if thats even possible. Hes already a champion. I hope this is our year for him and all our others.

I wanna see him beasts again, can't wait to see him beasts all over the players he beasts on.
