Post-Draft 53 Man Roster

Here's how I see it. The number in paranthesis is the minimum number at the position that we keep. Also, this isn't a depth chart.

QB (3) - Smith as the starter with Johnson, Kaepernick, and Tolzien battling for two spots. Johnson, Kaepernick make it. Tolzien to the practice squad if possible.
OT (3) - Davis, Staley, Boone
OG/C (5) - Goodwin, Iupati, Kilgore, Looney with Beeler, Person, and Slowey competing for the last spot. I think Slowey gets it.
TE (3) - Byham, Davis, Walker
WR (4) - Crabtree, Jenkins, Manningham, Moss
RB/FB (4) - Gore, Hunter, James, Miller
DL (6) - Jean Francois, McDonald, Smith, Sopoaga with Dobbs, Tukuafu, and Williams competing for two spots. Dobbs and Tukuafu make it.
ILB (4) - Bowman, Gooden, Grant, Willis
OLB (4) - Brooks and Smith with Haralson, Fleming and Johnson competing for two spots. Haralson and Fleming make it.
S (4) - Goldson, Spillman, Robinson, and Whitner
CB (4) - Brown, Culliver, and Rogers with Brock, Holcomb, Nelms, and Cox competing for 1 spot. Brock gets it.

ST (5) - Akers, Ginn Jr., Jennings, and Lee with Cartwright and Colin Jones competing. Cartwright gets it.

You'll notice that only adds up to 49 spots. That leads to 4 spots up for grabs among the following:

Dixon
Jacobs
Kyle Williams
Beeler
Person
Ian Williams
Cam Johnson
Holcomb

Colin Jones

I see those last 4 spots going to: Jacobs, Ian Williams, Cox, and Colin Jones (Jacobs and Cox I feel strongly about, the other two, not so much). But it will be a dogfight for those last few spots. That would leave Beeler, Person, Cam Johnson, Curtis Holcomb, and Cory Nelms on the practice squad.

MUCH rather keep Tolzien than JJ. I've NEVER been impressed w/him.

The way I looked at it the last spot came down to Kyle Williams, Ian Williams or Rock Cartwright. I went with Kyle Williams. In spite of his last game I think he's going to end up having a very good career as a WR.

Not bad. Still gonna be tough to keep Haralson at his $2.88M figure. I would cut Williams and keep Cartwright, I just feel Cartwright will be our Costanzo this year.

Also why Mike Person active over Looney? I would think Looney is active, of course if healthy.

I think it comes down roster wise to a 9th OL or 7th DL. 6th WR or an extra RB, interesting offseason and training camp to come, should be fun, can't wait.

I think Haralson's salary is a relatively cheap insurance policy to make sure we're not one unfortunate play away from a 7th rounder starting at a critical position. As far as Person vs Looney, Person has more experience at OT and we'll already have Kilgore active as an interior back-up.

True. I wouldn't be surprised if we add a vet like Leonard Davis or Jason Brown, who can play both OG and OT.

with the additions of Robinson and Cox, both reported to be good special teams players
I see C.Jones roster spot expendable

Williams takes that spot

I agree there may be a vet OL added, Slowey can probably be stashed on the PS
Im still not a fan of Boone at RG, but hopefully thats just till Looney is ready to take over

Byham may not have that 3rd TE spot so easy, Reuland may steal it
Could the Niners go with just Davis and Walker, and train Dobbs as the 3rd TE?

Have you been reading the multiple reports that Williams looks no worse than the 3rd best receiver in this off-season? Get over your bruised feelings regarding the NFCC game. Luckily, the coaches are not so sensitive.

I have no grudge vs williams and i know i am in the silent majority. However i think the rock will stick if it comes to he vs williams. The rock just has more versatility, he could be the captain of special teams , he is a backup fullback, he is a backup punt and kick returner and a fine fine vet in the locker room. i hope they keep both but since you asked,, the ability of cartwright to do soooo many things well would give him a nod over williams. due to his youth and his special teams ability,i think its best for the team for dixon to beat out jacobs but i have little faith in that

I think Colin Jones makes it, Like above no need for a 6th WR. Also Owusu I would imagine makes the PS along with Palmer.

You're saying release perhaps the third best receiver and last year's backup returner in favor of a 32-year old, 7th Round, 5'8", 215 lb backup fullback (see W. Tukuafu) and the replacement of a guy the Niners cut. Grudge.
