We have zero long term solutions for a 3-down back. And there is no need to paint ourselves into a corner next draft when we will desperately need one, and pray somebody good falls to us. Not an envious position for a run-first team.

If a legit 3-down option is available to us in the draft, we will take him.
many who are smarter than me when it comes to college football says that back will not be there till next year. gore still has some tread, so does jacobs,, spend those draft picks on more important things like a wide out, possible tight end, back up safety, possible back up inside linebacker, of course a right gaurd. you get your gore replacement next year. yee of little faith when it comes to the coaches on matters like this

What?

First of all, the draft hasn't even happened yet. Who knows what they'll do.

Second, it makes zero football or business sense to wait to get a starting caliber RB next year, should one of value present himself in the draft. Waiting til next year simply for the sake of waiting just puts us in a bad position. That means we will be forced to overdraft, or trade up for, a starting caliber RB.

Should a starting RB present himself this year, take him. The roster has zero long term options.

agree. i do not follow the logic of us signing guys who have won super bowls and somehow it is impossible that they could ever help us win a super bowl. it is a penis scratcher

Btw, 3-down backs are becoming both rare and irrelevant, especially in the style of offense that Harbaugh runs where we run a ton of power formations. I hate to say it, but RBs in these systems are almost a dime-a-dozen and having a top-tier, "3-down" back isn't really necessary. Definitely nice to have one, but the team can function just fine without one.

Point being, I don't see many teams feeling "desperate' for RB talent, since it's plentiful (and relatively cheap) both in the draft and in free agency.

Now, you could be right and we could try and address the RB situation with an eye towards the future...just don't be shocked if we wait until the later rounds to do it.

I'm not advocating for a first round RB. Just starting RB talent, regardless of round.

My point about waiting til next year is that, next offseason, we will be desperate for starting RB talent. So, it puts us (a run first team) in a tough spot to secure somebody reliable. If somebody of starting value makes it to us this draft, we should take him. That way, we avoid the desperation next offseason.

Dixons never been successful.Jacobs was aight when he took tiki's spot.THEN the jawin started,n then came the poor play.
But on the other hand there aint no difference between the two.we got 1 already,y get another back that plays the same???I understand n agree w the low risk-high reward thing w the other signings, but this guy????hell no,go draft a young guy.

If the old regimes trash is on the way out,y bring in someone elses??I hope it works,n anybody can change, but I jus dont like this cat.

again,, maybe they have looked at the draft and where are drafting and maybe , in thier long term planning, they have determined that its not worth it this year, gore still has tread, sign a guy for one year who has done more than what dixon could ever dream to do and get your back next year when the choices are better. this position is just a part of the pie and in my opinion is not a position of need to draft this year, esp if the crop of those type of backs are not plentifull lthis year. yes the draft has not arrived but i am pretty sure they have done thier planning for the draft and if they were planning to take a back, this move today would not have occured
So what does this mean for Dixon?
Looks like this draft is going to be heavy in the trenches, not skill positions.
I love this signing!

I completely disagree. Jacobs may not make it out of camp. That's TBD. I hope he's great and gives us 20 touchdowns. But signing a 30 year old RB to a 1 year backup type deal does not stop us from doing anything in the draft.

i know you are a good poster and know your football but you know I think you will admit we have a pretty good history of turning other peoples rejects into good solid players esp since its just a one year deal, we are not out anything. good debate VD
