Apparently Alex better watch out
Meh Grant Cohn doesn't really know much, just spouts off all the time. Personally I don't see JJ challenging Alex for this year after they just guaranteed Alex 7.5 mill this year with another 1.5 in likely to be earned incentives. This is mainly to push Kaepernick I guess, which I'm not really sure I agree with. Either you're confident in Kaep to come in and be your #2 if Alex gets hurt and potentially your QB of the future, or you're not. If we are trying to develop Kaep and we bring in JJ to take snaps from him during practice, I don't really see how that helps him develop.
Reminds me a lot of what Holmgren had going in Green Bay in the late 90s with Favre; Pederson, and Hasselbeck at QB depth; gotta have a nice & talented stable of QBs competing encase 'anything' happens.
Yes, getting the 3 best qb you can is a strategty you never see...

With no RG they will need all four of these young QBs! Injured? Next!!
Seriously, Harbaugh knows Johnson and Johnson did extremely well under Harbaugh in SD. Smith talked about how great it was last year that Crist created a friendly competition with the QBs and how much fun it was to try to win every little fascet of the day's work. Now they have another guy to add into the mix. Hope he does well and pushes Smith and CK.

2nd is I bet we are gonna have some wildcat packages next year. No more designed runs for Alex cuz he took some shots last year when they tried that. I think we will keep 3 qbs active on gamedays. Kaep and Johnson will compete for the backup spot with the loser designated as the wildcat specialist.
This. I also expect some wildcat type of plays now with Johnson aboard.
I can see 3 active on gamedays also. Especially if Johnson is playing every few snaps, gotta keep a healthy QB available.

I think it is Alex insurance. We were lucky he started all 16 last year with taking 40 plus sacks. I think he wins the number 2 job just because he has been in the NFL a while, had 5 starts, and knows the system. They may not think Ck is ready or don't want to put him in too early.

Lol. Maybe this can be a goaline type package give Johnson or kaep the option to run or throw.

Is signing JJ a vote of "no confidence" for Smith, Kaepernick and Tolzien? Wow, How much more dissing does Smith have to take? I'm all for competition, but it seems like Harbaugh abd Baalke are starting to have a credibility problem. You can't go around saying for months that Smith is an elite QB, and he's "our guy", and then keep trying to replace him with other quarterbacks. It makes them look silly, and what they say in public can't be trusted.

How about lining up in the Red Zone with all three QBs in the backfield?
Direct snap to Kaepernick, option pitch to Johnson to the right, Johnson TD pass to Smith on fade in left corner of End Zone.

Got that right. Harbaugh obviously loves mobile QB's. The more skills you bring to the table, the better.
