I'm all for competition, but it seems like Harbaugh abd Baalke are starting to have a credibility problem. You can't go around saying for months that Smith is an elite QB, and he's "our guy", and then keep trying to replace him with other quarterbacks. It makes them look silly, and what they say in public can't be trusted.

? Brought in a young guy familiar with Harbaugh's system, who was a cheap pick up. Athletic guy who can be 2nd or 3rd QB for a number of years. Not sure what they are suppose to do...cut all the back ups so starters feel more secure?

harbaugh publicly stated and told JJ alex is already the starter

Got that right. Harbaugh obviously loves mobile QB's. The more skills you bring to the table, the better.

This has been a dream of mine for years--two or three young, mobile QBs who can be interchangable and run a defense into the ground. Key would be ability to pass and run very well, obviously. In the past Smith was told to stay in the pocket to prevent injury...not sure that was a safe place for any SF QB the past six years.

I hope Tolzein still has a shot at making the team.

Its a pretty easy move to get. Harbaugh wants someone better than Tolzein on the roster behind Smith and he thinks Johnson might be better.

Meh I don't think he's that good, and I think Tolzein can be better than him. Whatever though.

What evidence do you have of Tolzien being any good?

Do not bring up the preseason. It's the damn preseason - the same preseason that made Chilo look good.

A couple of thoughts, first maiocco said that josh Johnson was told that Alex is the starter. So no drama there.

2nd is I bet we are gonna have some wildcat packages next year. No more designed runs for Alex cuz he took some shots last year when they tried that. I think we will keep 3 qbs active on gamedays. Kaep and Johnson will compete for the backup spot with the loser designated as the wildcat specialist.

Awesome! Now that's competition!

Kinda like Mad Max:

"Two men enter. One man leaves!"

Loser gets pounded by defenders, lulz

Lol. Maybe this can be a goaline type package give Johnson or kaep the option to run or throw.

How about lining up in the Red Zone with all three QBs in the backfield?

Direct snap to Kaepernick, option pitch to Johnson to the right, Johnson TD pass to Smith on fade in left corner of End Zone.

I see this as competition for kaepernick. If anyone thinks Alex won't be the starter next year you'd be delusional. I've never been high on kaepernick. I just don't see it. This proves me right. I'm not saying this proves it too all, but to me it does.

how does this prove you right? no one knows if kaepernick will be good or bad, you cant judge him fom last preseason because im sure there has been good qbs now that had bad to questionable rookie preseasons. this signing is all about competition that harbaugh enjoys to see

Like I said. In my mind it proves me right on my belief in what I see in kaepernick. Like all of us here it's an opinion. We all don't really know anything.

Who cares...throw the balls out, way out...
If we dress 3 on gamedays what are we benching?

I'd have to go with Willis here. Johnson games have been poor, what is he 0-5 with a 5 td to 10 int ratio although Tolzein has not played in a reg season game, as a qb we have seen him throw in preseason and he is accurate and has great anticipation, something Johnson has proven not to have. Either way neither Tolzein nor jj will start this year and probably next

hahahaha that reminds me of that running back the niners had on practice squad that tore it up in preseason. thomas clayton? championship.
I really like this signing.

There are three QBs with similar attributes - Alex, JJ, Kaep. All are pretty athletic for their positions. I think the idea is if a guy went down, any of them could go in and they wouldn't have to change the offense. Otherwise you have a situation like Orton/Tebow/Quinn, where one guy obviously sticks out and the entire offense has to be changed for that guy.
