As the 3rd QB he can help coach up Kap and is insurance if Smith goes down and if kap is not ready. Nothing wrong with bringing in a vet with experience in Harbaughs O.
If Kap or Smith is the future QB for this team i can see Johnson as a career backup. he has the potential to be the next Grback/Bono
I see why people are mad, Smith is an above average backup QB in the NFL. only 1 team kicked his tires and signed an aging injured prone QB instead. Every team in the NFL watched what smith did vs the Saints but consistency is the key to a great QB and his stats dont lie Smith has trouble getting in sync with WR's i dont think we have had a 1000yard receiver since we drafted Smith and only 1 game with 300+ yards in 7years..... any competition for the QB spot and the smith lovers get angry like Montana just got traded or something. Theres nothing wrong with this team wanting to upgrade the QB spot after a little success. I mean Dilfer and Brad Johnson were replaced after winning a SB. and smith is at the level of a Dilfer/Brad Johnson.
A couple of thoughts, first maiocco said that josh Johnson was told that Alex is the starter. So no drama there.
2nd is I bet we are gonna have some wildcat packages next year. No more designed runs for Alex cuz he took some shots last year when they tried that. I think we will keep 3 qbs active on gamedays. Kaep and Johnson will compete for the backup spot with the loser designated as the wildcat specialist.
