Why did we overpay so much for Brooks? And where does that leave us now?

You shouldn't be allowed to start threads.

You can learn a whole lot more by reading than writing. I encourage posters to spend more time reading other people's posts (especially guys like AB, Marvin, GOTD, OTC, NCommand, Oldman9er, etc). Do internet searches on things if you aren't sure of them.... you can learn a lot by researching. And with contracts always take a step back and wait for the details... players hardly ever get the full contract. It's just a number.... 1st thing to look at is the signing bonus and that's the only thing guaranteed to start with.

As of right now AB says he will account for 4.25 million dollars on the cap. 17.5 bonus/6 years (length of contract) equals 3.5 a year on the cap for the bonus... plus he has a 750,000 dollar base salary. And also, Paraag is one of the best in the business. He knows how to manipulate contracts to help us out in with the cap.

With the massive overpayment to Brooks now multiple of these may not be able to be signed. I just don't know what the front office was thinking? The highest sacks he ever had was 7. The highest tackes he ever had was 49. You explain it to me?

IMO he's a product of the players around him. Justin Smith and Aldon Smith are beasts. And Ray McDonald is hugely underrated. Sopoaga is good. Willis is great. Bowman is good. He's in a phenemonal front 7. And the attention is put to other guys. I just don't think he is $44 million good. And it has future salary cap implications. I'm fine with keeping our players. But I don't think that means massively overpay. We could have made OLB a priority in the draft too and picked up Vincent Jackson or Bowe with the money. I just don't know about this deal. Glad to have him back? Yes. At this price? No way.

Maiocco is reporting that the first year cap hit of the Brooks contract is $2.85MM.

So, Brooks is taking up less than $3MM of the cap this season.

In all seriousness though if he is making like 3 on the cap this year, I would bet year 5 and 6 (or at least 6 he will be making an outrageous number as I am thinking it is backloaded meaning he will probably be cut then. A lot of guys will make 3-5 million in the 1st years and then it goes up every year and then those last years which they probably won't see they make an outrageous # like 15-17 million.

Same as you... I should have put etc because I know you are a great poster as well. There are a bunch of them but I normally don't get into names like everyone else. I know some but for being here since Jan of 05 I don't know as many as I should. I feel the same as you. Typically ignore the one liners or the obvious hate. But those posts that are clear, thought out, etc. I read every one on the topic of interest esp. if it's from a different perspective...adds value to the conversation. But true, after a while you start to notice the quality of the post and who posts them. Quality overrides everything. Much respect...
