Why are people really surprised about the ranking? Alex is not that good period. I hope he plays well this yr. I really do. But he needs to play well this yr no matter what.

Don't care where Smith ranks now, just at the end of this season when Harbaugh and company have to make a decision--resign for long term or go elsewhere.
...and did someone say John Clayton is an "expert?"

Given his history, it's spot on. He needs to prove himself, period. Time to put up or shut up for the rest of his career 'cause it's going to be audition time as well.
Whether the audition is for other teams or Harbaugh, time to

"Things could be rough in the short term for the 49ers, as Jim Harbaugh must adjust to life as an NFL head coach without the benefits of an organized offseason program during the lockout. And, um, Alex Smith is his quarterback. A healthy Frank Gore would help greatly on offense, and wide receiver Michael Crabtree could benefit if Harbaugh's West Coast offense takes root. Linebacker Patrick Willis must carry the defense."
he's a joke. And so are we....f**k

I can see the excuses next offseason.
"It was his first year under harbaugh's complicated offense.
He will be great next year. Remember what his college coach said?"
"the offensive line was the reason for his mistakes"
"just look how crappy his WRs are"
