Jim Harbaugh's decision to let San Francisco 49ers rookie Colin Kaepernick work with the starting offense in the third preseason game makes so much sense.
Making that type of move in a regular-season game would constitute jerking around the starter. That would make little sense in the absence of a performance-based reason.
In this case, Harbaugh wants to see how Kaepernick and other select backups perform against another team's starting unit. That is exactly what a lot of us would like to see for players at various positions throughout the division.
Harbaugh thinks the experience could better prepare those backups for regular-season action if called upon down the line. At quarterback, Alex Smith will start and play perhaps two series. Kaepernick could then come into the game for a stretch before yielding to Smith. Coaches always reserve the right to adjust their approach should circumstances dictate, but I see no real downside for the 49ers.
Smith appears clearly established as the No. 1 quarterback at this point. Giving some first-team reps to Kaepernick should not significantly undercut Smith's short-term job security. Harbaugh, as a longtime NFL quarterback, understands the dynamics of the position.
This seems like a logical move and an example of a coach willing to defy convention when it makes sense to him. And if Kaepernick looks great, we'll have lots to talk about on the blog. I'm all for that, too.
If Kap plays lights out vs Texans starters, we will have yet again another QB controversy! And it's going to create division in the locker room and all hell will break lose!

I just read the article on the front page, will edit a link in as well, But it says that Colin Kaepernick is going to get the majority of PT with the 1st team, as well as players on the bubble satruday Vs Houston.. honestly. BOOOOOOOO.

With the lockout having as much affect of teams as it has, getting prepared, being in synchronization, this would be the most important game of all, and wow, were going to see a rookie who (im sorry to break hopes) has no chance of starting week 1 (OR succeeding even if he were to come in late in the season due to smiths poor play, an injury ETC,) play the majority of a game where teams amongst the league play the most realistic game plan??? bad move JIMMY. smith and this offensive core need to get the work, not the rookie unless of course he seriously believes he would need to be ready to play this season. in which case if he did, this season is already tanked. So really, where is Jims thinking with this as far as getting this offense better and there still being a 4th preseason game for kaepernick to play the entirety on??? why would smith not play at LEAST one whole half.. why not even a quarter?? Were putting our eggs in his basket, why not just put them all there, and get this guy as ready as possible for Week 1 Vs Seattle???? Anyone have any opinion on this?? Good? Bad?? please leave feedback but this just kind of disturbs me.. Smith and the Offense need to do something against a potential playoff team in houston. Performing against the raiders does not say much we can all agree. Bad move jimmy.. bad move. I know we havent played yet, but even this Mentality is bad. Someone calm my nerves..

Have you read what Harbaugh said?
He will rotate the players if some has tomake te team you have to know how he plays agaisnt a top player.

It's also clear that Kaepernick needs to be evaluated in a game not against camp fodder.

Davis, Clayton, Maxwell lookd like Allpros against camp fodder.

So relax, actually agree with this we need to know who is for real and who has to go.

It also tells us that Kapernick is doing very well, and Harfbaugh wants to see how far he's come. He also never sadi that the starters are going to sit on the bench.

-Q: Will Alex return to the game after he exits and Kaepernick plays?
-HARBAUGH: It’s possible. It’s possible. Like I said earlier in the week, you want to get your starters as many situational situations in the game as possible. And he may return for two-minute drill or another series. Could be just kind of see how it plays out, make a battlefield decision out there.
I’d like to get some “backed up,” I’d like to get some two-minute with Alex…

Don't really know what to make of this. I'm sure there is a method to his madness but it's definitely different...I'll give him that.

True, but even so, do you think there is enough confidence on harbaughs part for smith that playing the kaepernick decoy card would really benefit us week 1 moreso than just getting smith ready to fire on all cylinders?? im still not so sure.. ay yi yi.. lol

IF it Messes with Pete Carroll head and makes him waist time preparing for both, YES I think JH would do that!!!!! WHATS YOUR DEAL
I think we will see Kaeps first two pro INT's on Sat. (I don't believe he has thrown one yet) Awesome strategy by Harball, we get to see hunter and dixon, AND KAep against the starters, then we can put to rest how good hunter really is or isnt.

Don't get dizzy...

He threw two against the saints 2nd and 3rd stringers.

Ah ok, well he will add to that total then, I think Kaep will be great, but he definitely needs to sit and wait. I'm glad we got Kaep, I wanted Dalton but so far (this preseason) it doesn't look like Dalton is doing much better.

I don't think so because he hasn't played "lights out" against the other teams back ups.

Who's D is "better"

Texans or Raiders?

Kaep didn't look amazing against the Raiders, so how much of a test will the Texans Be? I think their secondary was torn apart last year, and all they added was jonathan joseph right?

I think too many folks are not seeing that Colin is still a work in progress. He will be good, but it is gonna take a good amount of time and patience. I just hope people don't do him like they do Smith and crap all over him if he takes longer than they think he should to get it together. At least he has a legit coach teaching him.
