A whopping 200 more yards, I wouldn't call that alone very much improvement. I see Morgan being drafted late due to character issues and his inconsistency with catching the ball, both of which are easily changed within a reasonable time frame.(one or two seasons I would think) He had and still possesses the physical ability to be a decent WR in the league. He would have even more to prove if he comes back due to the fact of the injury, being around the system and in going into his 5th year, IMO. The guy is a great piece to have on any team and can solidify his spot on a roster if he kicks the errors.

200 yards improvement each year is pretty damn good.

No, it's not. But I believe Morgan is better and could be better than his numbers. His numbers:

2009 - 527yds
2010 - 698 yds
2011 - 220 yds

Saying '200 yards improvement each year' is a bit misleading also, cause he only had one 178yds improvement. Zone math -- got to love it

I wouldn't call that alone very much improvement, but he has improved in his blocking, his ability to get away from a jam on the line of scrimage and his timing with Smith. Morgan is a good WR. Most of the arguments you make for Smith could also apply to Morgan. Too bad Morgan can't throw to himself......

Anyway, if you look at how good Morgan looked this year with a real WR coach, you shouldn't even be focusing on the past numbers. Dude looked like a legit number 1 (not elite) before he got hurt.

Its a coulda, woulda, shoulda argument when thinking about last season but IMHO from everything I've seen from Morgan over the years says that he is worth bringing back and should get a genuine chance at securing a starting job next season(unless we sign Marques Colston or Vincent Jackson but even then I would want him back as #3).
1 receiver out there won't get money. Wait it out. Then sign him.
Colston has to be a short term contract with his injury history likely 4 mill a year.
morgan is an ok WR. best suited as a #3. i'll never forget the thursday night game against the chargers he's being pushed out of bounds and f**king fumbles it BACK INTO THE FIELD OF PLAY where eric weddle catches it but thankfully weddle stepped on the line before he got possession.

for some reason i just don't trust morgan. not saying he's bad but if this is going to be our big splash to help our offense.... no
Good blocker, fits our system.....$3.5 mill sign bonus and 2.8 mill a year for 4 years with a option fo a 5th.
I like this guy 10 times better than crabtree. Reliable hands, great work ethic, looks like he wants to play for the niners... this guy needs to be signed ASAP

You really think that will get it done?
What will he get elsewhere? That's all I want to know. Why would you consider paying him and Average Alex more than you had to.
If Morgan gets a nice deal, show us the offer sheet and maybe we'll match. The fact of the matter is we can get better at this position
with free agent options and draft picks. If he comes back he can sign a deal the 9ers can live with or walk. He's never had breakout
season and he's coming off injury. He has no leverage.
I want to keep Morgan as much as the next guy but what kind of leverage does he have? He hasn't been all that spectacular and doesn't have the number to back up a sizable contract. What case against the 49ers does he have to get a larger contract?

It should be close. Often they negotiate off of recent comparable contracts. Last year the Packers James Jones got 3 years for $9.4 million and his stats through four seasons were just a bit better than Morgans.
