Two dumbest posts I have ever seen posted on this board - by Marvin and NickBradley! Are you two serious?

"90% of NFL teams will be running 3-4's in 5yrs" (please share your science and facts with the rest of the board?)

"The Niners under Bill Walsh ran a 3-4" (can someone verify this with Hacksaw, Norton & Plummer - they would be interested to know that they were ALWAYS playing out of position and scheme!).

Look. Let's have a dialogue on what D "fits" our team and personnel. But, let's not make chit up to support a misinformed argument for or against............ You can do that on the other boards!
Our defense is not the Steelers, or the Ravens D, but it's still a damn good D. This year and last year, was the best defense that we've had in a long time. People obviously forgot how atrocious our defense was before we installed the 3-4.

We have very little personnel for a 4-3. Who are our great edge rushers? Lawson??? Haralson??? LaBoy?!?!?...Sopoaga is NOT a 4-3 tackle, 4-3 DT's are supposed to get some penetration and disrupt plays in the backfield, does that sound like Sopoaga? or Franklin?...JSmith has never played full time 4-3 DT, and I doubt at this point in his career he's going to want to learn a new system. Besides Spencer, we don't have ONE good cover DB, and you need good cover DB's in a 4-3.

4-3 defense is old fashioned. The only 4-3 D worth a s**t in this league, is the Vikings, however, we don't have two true DT studs like they do, or a great DE. Jets, Steelers, Ravens, Chargers, this is what you think of when you talk about great defenses, and soon we can start throwing the Pats, Packers, and Chiefs into that mix...3-4 > 4-3.

lol, no you are right, this league is obviously changing into a 4-3 defense...obviously, the best defense's in the league are running the 4-3.
remember when the ravens went to the 4-3 and ray lewis hated it, well thats what will happen to Willis, you basically want to neutralize our best player on the team because the DL we have cant generate pass rush? tell you something, they won't play any different in a 4-3. They D is fine, played respectable balll all year! Run D is stout, just need a DB and a GOOD OLB, not these projects where 4 OLB generate a total of 12 sacks.

Nope!

We haven't gotten any heat on the QB since we switched to the 3-4. Our run defense is okay but the pass defense has been terrible

And whom do we have to play the DE postiton?Don't say J.Smith because he's a DT.

Again we miss a passrusher be it a 4-3 DE or a 3-4 OLB.

I agree. Lawson-Willis-Bowman is real good LBs for 4-3, very fast. Smith-Franklin-Soap-McDonald. We wouldn't get much pressure with that so we'd need to upgrade the DE spot.

Everything about this post is... just wrong. I'm just so horrified at the time it would take to deal with this one. You presume a great deal about what we do and don't have. We know we have subpar key personnel for the 3-4 For this personnel... that being rush LBs and a NT (with Franklin's slightly above average arse heading to FA). That much, we know. For you to say we don't have the DTs and DEs.... it's remarkable presumptuous. I'd rather go with the scheme that may be a question mark... over a scheme that is a proven failure. For this teams' personnel? 4-3 > 3-4

Really...all our players a built for the 3-4, we just need better DB play
I guess people dont like being in the top of the league on D so lets make a switch and put our d back 2 or 3 years shall we....
We can't run the 3-4 like we did this year. Teams eliminated Willis in big games. The 4-3 protects the middle line backer to make plays. We have serious issues with both TKO and Lawson as free agents in addition to Haralson being F+ material. We can't fix both the QB spot and get the linebackers we need given the high percentage of teams drafting for the 3-4. Especially given that the pats pick three times before our second pick because if any team is gonna seal up linebacker it'll be them. It should be noted that only 3 teams run the 3-4 effectively: Ravens, Steelers, and Patriots. 2 of those teams have HOF defensive minds creating match ups. Skins, Chiefs, Broncos = fail.
I hope we switch back to the 4-3 but isn't Harbaugh a 3-4 guy?

In here and in other articles, JH would run whatever scheme the personnel dictates he should.

JH: It's base out of a 3-4 but that could still have some principles out of a 4-3. The evaluation of our personnel has never been more important than it is this spring, with new coaches and a new scheme. Even if that's the base, we'll do whatever is best to stop people. Vic's got experience in both of them -- in just about any defense that's ever been run.
