i think alex is a good guy, but F**K this! no more smith!! this is as good as he gets in the pros!! he is at his peak of his career right now! that's a low ceilingwe need a true super star at qb!!
if those other 28 teams jump off a cliff, we wanna not do that.. so lets not be like those other 28 teams and find a true qb!
I was only suggesting that if we are all waiting for Joe Montana reincarnate, we may not live to see it.
On another level, looking around the league, other than the obvious top 4, Brady, Peyton, Rivers and Brees, with Vick waiting to be anointed, who would make you happy as the 49er QB?
I'm just curious as to your standard.
here's 16 I'd be happy with...
Sanchez - is close to being benched,
Brady
Flacco - WAY over-rated, the Ravens win because of defense, not Flacco
Roethlisberger
P. Manning
Schaub - has the best WR in the league and still can't win big games
Rivers
E. Manning - lower rating than Alex
Romo - surrounded by the best all-around TE and quality receivers and still doesn't win
Vick
Cutler - if you don't like Smith's decisions how can you like this guy, has the perfect OC for his arm
Rodgers
Brees
Freeman - let's see more than 6 games where he really did well
Ryan
Bradford - lower rating than Smith
interesting note: by my count 12 of these 16 are 1st round picks
edit: these aren't the ONLY QBs i would prefer to Alex, there are many more than 16 of those, this is the level of QB i feel we should be aspiring to.. anything less that one of these and we are likely going to have a hard time winning
There are fewer quality QBs in this league now than at any other time in the last 30 years. Too much difference between the college game and the pros and too much money paid to rookie QBs that are forced to play before they are ready. PT is helpful but if the player isn't ready it just builds bad habits.
Here's my take on Flacco below. He is not overrated.

I actually read a few posts this season arguing how Alex was much better than Eli. Smh.

plus has anyone looked at his WR corp this year? Both his starting WRs have missed serious time with injury. I don't know who he's even throwing to aside from Boss and Manningham, and those two are servicable at best

Too much difference between the college game and the pros and too much money paid to rookie QBs that are forced to play before they are ready. Bradford is still a rookie, playing on a talentless team, with lousy receivers. I'd take him on the 49ers.
He has one of the brightest young OCs in the league who has tailored a system to match his skills and development. Put Bradford on the 49ers right now and he would be a disaster. He and Alex are excellent comparison of how to, and how NOT to, bring a QB from a spread system in college into the pro game. Pat Shurmur has done everything right and Mike Nolan/Mike Singletary did everything wrong.
I'd add Romo back too. While I don't think he's great, he'd be better than anyone on our current roster. He has won more consistently under a terrible coach than the 49ers QB under terrible coaching with similar personnel, talented TE, strong running game, and average NFL receivers.
If you think the 49er talent is in any way comparable to the Dallas talent then we are not starting from anything close to the same starting point. Even VD is not the equal of Jason Whitten as an ALL AROUND TE.
I'd take Schaub and Flacco too. While neither seem to be the next Joe Montana, both could take the right team deep in the playoffs, and I think Flacco has.
Flacco has yet to put his team on his back and carry them to a single win. Not once.
Schaub is an interesting question mark. He puts up good numbers but can't seem to get over the hump. Not sure if it's him, coaches, defense...
With the best wide out in all of football and the league leading rusher he should be a LOT better than he is.
Eli is garbage. I wouldn't want Eli. Worst..Super Bowl..MVP.......EVER!
If his last name wasn't Manning he wouldn't be in the conversation.

Eli has 19 INT's this year
Flacco is overrated and has a great D that saves his ass
Sanchez: At his current pace he'll throw 3500 yards and 20 TDs this year. That's up from 2400 and 12 last year. His rating is up from 63 to 74. So obviously he's improving. A sure thing, hardly, but he is not yet at his ceiling which is why I included him.
Eli: Your honestly going to knock Eli? On pace for 3900 yds and 30 TDs and an 86 rating this year (with a decimated WR corp). Sure the INTs are high, but the discussion is which QBs would you be happy to have on the 49ers and he definitely makes the list.
Flacco: Overrated? How about underrated? Did you know he has the 13th highest career QB rating ever? That he's on pace to throw for 4000 yds with 26 TDs and 10 INTs?
Bring some facts to this discussion next time
Current pace doesn't mean s**t, as much as I support him that argument was used for Alex last year and equated to s**t this year.
Sanchez has had 2 back to back games without a TD pass, and the last 3 games has had only 1. He has played 5 games total this year without a TD pass. He has fumbled the ball 9 times this year, 9 TIMES. He is playing on a team with a very good ground game and a great D. He has had a few good games but has not been really impressive and worthy of his draft position. Even Rex mentioned that he thought about benching him in the last game. The lowest ranking they have as a whole team is passing.
Eli is a decent QB nothing special, if he didn't carry the Manning name he would not be looked at the same. His pace for INT's would also put him easily over 20, not a good stat by any means and Alex would never get a pass for that. Go back and look at the W's and L's and the competition.
Car-W garbage team 3 TD
Chi-W good team 0 TD
Hou-W semi good team 3 TD
Det-W garbage team 2 TD
Dal-W bad at that point of the year 4 TD
Sea-W garbage team 3 TD
Jac-W good team 2 TD
Was-W garbage team 0 TD
Minn-W garbage team 1 TD
He has beaten 2.5 good teams this year, nothing overly special by any means. He like Sanchez has a good ground game with a very good D. The lowest ranking they have as a whole team is passing.
Now to Flacco, Mr. Media loves him for some reason. Flacco misses a lot of passes that Alex is usually crucified for. I have watched him float a lot of short passes over RB's and WR's. Like Eli this year he has not beaten a lot of tough teams.
NYJ-W semi good team
Cle-W garbage team
Pit-W Ben wasn't playing
Den-W garbage team
Buf-W garbage team
Mia-W semi good team
Car-W garbage team
TB-W semi good team
Hou-W semi good team
So I can put him at winning against 4 semi decent teams. He's middle of the pack with TD's, yards, and competitions. He's in the lower end when it comes to attempts. He has been pretty accurate and smart with the ball but he doesn't blow me away. Without that coaching staff I'm not sure he would be doing as well. He unlike the others is one of the stronger spots on the whole team, but he still has a very strong D.

However, even before the Houston game, the commentators were saying that BOTH QBs needed to play a game where they put their team on their back and carried them to victory. If EITHER of them hoped to move from the category of average and up to very good, they needed to do that. One even noted that Flacco referred to himself as being an "elite" QB but Jaws, IIRC, said if he was truly going to be in that category he needed to do a lot more than he had done to that point.
In the end, the Ravens won that game, not because Flacco put the team on his back but because Schaub threw a pick 6 right into the hands of a waiver wire DB.
So much for "elite" QBs...

I thought this discussion was about our plans going forward. No I wouldn't want any QB on a team coached by Singletary/Raye/Johnson. I'm operating under the assumption that they will all be gone next year and we have a competent coaching staff.
Bradford - I'd take him on the 49ers with the proper coaching staff.
Romo - Cowboys and 49er talent level is not equal, I agree. But there are similarities. Both have suspect offensive lines, both have strong running games (either a single strong back or a platoon) both have talented TEs. I'm not saying that Davis > Witten, just both are talented. You disagree that Davis has talent and could be used more productively by a well coached team, one that schemes before games?
Flacco - I haven't watched every Ravens game, so I don't know if he has ever carried a team. But I have seen him stand in the pocket and try and make plays against some pretty good opponents. Is he a world beater, no. Not yet anyway. But I think he has more of the intangibles that Smith seems to be missing.
Schaub - Like I wrote, interesting question mark. I wouldn't give him $12M a year, but I would take him on the 49ers.
None of those guys would be my first choice, or are even realistic options, but for the purposes of playing the "what if" game, I would include them. Again, this is assuming Singletary and Co. are gone.

It is 90% about coaching and 10% player. VD is a good example. He is excelling due to his freakish physical ability, and he has improved his blocking ability through his own strength and some coaching. However, he still has a MAJOR flaw in his technique as a TE in that he does not yet know how to make hot reads and adjustments nor does he run good short routes. This lack is really hurting the team on blitz situations and 3rd down. The TE should be almost a given in those situations yet the 49ers continue to have one of the lowest 3rd down conversion rates in the league.
So bringing in any of those other QBs will not improve the team much if the coaching staff cannot put the pieces together.
I'm out. Have a good day, y'all.
we need a true super star at qb!!
