I think Orton has always been a little under-rated (he was always the best QB in Chicago) but I do agree that McDaniel's system allows a fairly above-average QB to put up pretty spectacular numbers.

yeah, its f**king depressing. I'm still holding out hope that the longer MJ is calling plays we will be seeing more "opening up" of the offense. EVERYONE will benefit, Gore especially. I think Gore would be putting up insane numbers in a wide open offense.

you mean like how Gore's numbers improved last year when they turned to a spread offense? It's called spreading out the defense. The defense wouldn't be stacking the box like they are now on 1st and 2nd downs.

exactly. we all laugh at people on this board for pretending to know more the people who are actually making the decisions, but this is one area where you don't really have to know s**t about football to figure out how to solve our problems, and that's the worst part. THERE'S SO MUCH EVIDENCE to show us how to best utilize our personnel, but the coaches, watching the same games we do, just don't see it.

While I agree that running a more spread attack will benefit the offense, especially Smith, I think that people are seriously undervaluing Orton. The guy is a good QB, and has been since last year. He's got a pretty strong arm as well.

i seriously cant think of a time when we were not in a 2 min offense where we passed the ball on first down

the coaches CHOOSE to not see it. Singletary sees Gores 3.5 ypc as something to build the offense around

i think he's always been pretty good. he's been a winner ever since his rookie year. definitely an underrated qb. still, its hard to see orton and not imagine that smith would do at least that well in the same system, with a coach who really understands the QB position calling the shots.

Sounds so cliche and Singleteryesque but i think Orton has better "intangibles" and an overall better feel for the game. Lets hope that Smith is finally figuring it out though...I have a feeling he's gonna be a better QB moving forward and we're gonna get some wins...enough to save the season? doubtful. enough to save his career as a 49er starter? possibly. I'm a huge Smith hater but if he can turn it around and play great from here on out, it might be in our best interest to bring him back. it's like yea he's sucked for 6 years but if he's finally good, it wouldn't make sense to get rid of him now...
