I'll give it a B- Still too many runs up the gut for my liking. Only problem is the other team is still loading the box waiting for Gore.
I'll give Johnson props for getting Ginn and Ziegler into flow. I've always gone on record that Josh (Mr. No Separation) Morgan is the most overrated player on this team and is causing this offense to bog down. Both Ziggy and Ginn get out of the blocks faster and give Alex a legit target on the short/intermediate routes.
I also liked the one slant pattern that Ziggy ran. Wonder why we don't run more of these?
But overall it was an improvement over Jimmy Raye's play calling.

I would say B or higher, if not for 5 turnovers and a missed field goal, NONE his fault.
We would of been fine.

A solid A-.
Johnson was the only person on the team thinking 4 plays ahead. If that screen pass the last drive would have been completed to Gore from the 45, we would have won the game. There was no one 20 yards in front of him except for his own lineman.
He did well to put us in position to win, but with 5 turnovers that didn't happen.
Plus Gore, Crab, and VD scored. Can't ask for better production from our skill positions than that.....other than some guy named Smith who gave away seven points in the 4th

C -, however this is an improvement. But - ignored Vernon Davis the entire first half, kept calling Gore up the middle when everyone in the stands much less the Eagles knew it was coming, still needs to call a broader variety of plays. After the first drive, no more TD until the end of the 4th quarter. We are not going to win many games with 7 or 10 points (plus garbage-time scores), particularly since we don't have a shut-down defense. It's all about scoring more points than the opponent, and MJ has to get us up from 7-10 to the 20-30 point range.
Agreed. Our biggest problems are ball security and our defense.
But our defense has pretty much the same personnel it had last year. With the replacement of Lewis for Mays and the same coordinator. My question is, why isn't the defense playing as good as it did last year?
One answer is that offenses have learned how to deal with #52. Need to use Spikes and Bowman in a more open scheme that allows them to roam more instead of playing like a defensive fullback.
Also, teams have learned that Aubrayo Franklin is a one-gap NT and have taken advantage of the fact he usually takes a slant instead of a head-on approach. Last night Philly, and previously KC and Atlanta, just used his momentum to push him out of the play and allow the runner to pick which side was open. Need a true two-gap NT or switch to a 4-3.
Thanks for the input. Is what you're saying though a fact or opinion though? I'm just curious. I want to know the real issue.
It started with Seattle who used some drags across the field that put more traffic in the lanes Willis normally runs. Kansas City used it even more. Both teams just used traffic as well as cutbacks to keep Willis from having clean runs to the ball carrier. Also misdirection screen plays have been set up to take Willis away from the play. With Willis slowed down, it opens up a lot of things.
As far as Franklin is concerned, my comment is both my observation and reinforced by others here and a single mention by Barrows, IIRC. (If is was Maiocco I apologize) With Franklin not taking up two blockers OR getting to the ball carrier, it puts more work on Sopoaga (who has played very well) and the LBs.

an emmitt smith type rather than a barry sanders type--Gore is sort of in between-- a poor man's both.
The problem isn't Gore. It is partially play design and partially a blocking style that is easy to defeat with defensive double teams. Also two rookies plus a relatively inexperienced center don't help either.

I lay much of that on Singletary's direction.
The 49ers should do to MS what they did with Seifert back in the days he was OC - keep him out of offense planning meetings.

I think Mike Johnson has called 2 very good games. You cant throw the ball every down no matter what.. What I would like to see is more of a pass pass run.. let the pass set up the run, and more outside run..

We still run on 99% of all first downs and 96 % on all second downs. I wish we would mix that up some , maybe go deep 1 time on first down . I would also like to see more runs from the shotgun , Alex needs to stay in the shotgun until we can get some guys up front that can block . This OL needs to be booed and kicked in the @ss for the lame job it has done this season . And why did we even waste the $$ signing westbrook ??? 5 games into the season , and it has been a nightmare on both sides of the ball .

“I think [offensive coordinator] Mike [Johnson] was trying to follow through with what we had talked about during the week. This is not a game that we wanted to go in and just throw the ball all over the place. We wanted to try and formulate a balance
after I read that from Sing's presser, I give MJ a pass for all the retarded run plays up the gut

i think they were also trying to run because Washington ran all over the eagles the week before.

Combined stats since Mike Johnson took over:
Crabtree:
Receptions: 14
Yards: 163
Average: 11.8
TDs: 1
LG: 22
Davis:
Receptions: 9
Yards: 140
Average: 24.5
TDs: 2
LG: 51
Morgan:
Receptions: 5
Yards: 40
Average: 9.8
TDs: 0
LG: 16
I give a lot of mulligans to Smith actually throughout last night's game. Johnson put us in horrible positions with those stupid Gore runs, but Alex converted more third downs than of any other game this season (last night).

Bear in mind, the fact that he is using the playbook Jimmy Raye left him! The play book that Singletary approved of! Using this playbook MJ has to create a game plan for SINGLETARY'S approval!
Now once the game starts, using a Singletary approved game plan drawn up from Jimmy Raye's playbook, he has actually been able to get ALEX SMITH to move this offense!
Oh yea, I give him a freaking Nobel Peace prize for making anything out of the slab of turd that is our playbook!
A+

I think Johnson has done a better job of playcalling, but there is still way too much of a reliance on Gore in the offense. Sometimes it just seems that Gore is more important to the offense than actually putting points on the scoreboard.
Gore is a good RB, but he is not a gamechanging superstar RB like CJ or AP. Its ridiculous to just keep feeding him the ball against 9 man fronts just for the sake of feeding him the ball. All it does is lead to situations where we need long yardage on 2nd and 3rd downs.
Westbrook and Dixon need get a series or two a game. We all know what Westbrook can do and Dixon needs to be given the ball once in a while to switch things up. Right now the 49ers are ridiculously easy to scheme against because everything runs through Gore. And I mean EVERYTHING.
The only time this team moves the ball right now seems to be on the opening drive when they are running off of a script, or when they fall behind. Everything else is still the same old conservative BS we have been complaining about since last season. At one point last night they ran the ball nine straight times on first down, which inevitably led to 2nd; and third and longs. And its not just the plays its the players on the field. Out of those 9 straight runs on first down, 8 of them came with either Norris, or 2 TEs on the field, often it was both.
Until Singletary can just STFU, and let Michael Johnson do his job and develop a gameplan to put points on the board, the offense will continue to sputter.
