According to Sando (with information from ESPN stats) the 49ers defense is ranked 16th in rushing (out of the 32 teams), 20th in pass defense, and 26th in points allowed per game.
They have some work to do.

The defense is the weakness.

Maybe so, but when you're 0-4 everybody is contributing.

at least use a pic of a pick. That's actually recent.

Why is it everytime we need a simple defense stop...we cant do it? The opposing offense just marches right down and scores. WTF!!!!! The ATL game we had them at 3rd and 15. And we give up a 20 yard pass to a TE. What type of defense does that?!??!
2011 draft we need a CB or some type of DB in the first round! No drafting QB's. Go get a proven starter! (We missed McNabb)
and what? stick with Smith at the healm no way jose! I say we trade Clements for a first round pick and then we can get a QB and a CB

We were told the Defense was top 5, more like 15-20. What we lack at crunch time is a killer pass rusher. At least opposing wide receivers aren't getting behind the defense as in years past. The only other solution is attack more in these prevent situations.

We knew coming into the season that our offense would be mid-tier at best, it was dependent on our defense to be improved and get those stops.
2-2 we would be if the defense comes up with those critical stops. And maybe Raye is still here, dare i say gifthorse?
A weakness, well with a team that has a completely crippled offense, our defense ain't the weakness more like just a disappointment.

Dont worry. We'll be able to pad our stats another year as we have yet to play all the NFC West teams twice.

Read the bold.
And we won't get a first for Clements.

I don't think the defense is as weak as the offense right now. They have not been as strong as advertised by some. They have a hard time stopping the pass. That comes back to bite you when it gets down to crunch time.

our whole teams too inconsistent
1st week: D looks like crap, O did ok but couldnt execute key first downs
week 2: D keeps brees in check, Alex looks great, we played a great game
week 3: D gets owned in every way possible, alex looks like crap
week 4: D plays good - only allowed 14 points but got drove on twice to lose the game, our offense looked good at times but we only scored 7 points, and Alex smith plays like crap again..

I disagree. Although the D didn't come up big in the NO and ATL games, they played good if not great the entire game, constantly putting the offense in position to succeed. However when you play great teams like the Saints and Falcons, they're bound to do well if you don't put em away with your offense. In the NO game, it was the turnovers and unfortunate tipped INT at the end, and in the ATL game it was Smith's bonehead mistakes. Sure, the Defense didn't play great when it really mattered most, but the offense definetly didn't help them out, even the D helped them out time after time ( atleast in those two games )
this^
Some people think if our defense doesn't stop two of the top offenses in the NFL every single drive then its the weakness. Who cares if our offense is averaging hree turnovers a game.
