Big picture, it is another loss. It confirms what many of us already suspected, that we have the horses to compete with playoff and Super Bowl caliber teams, but to join the club we have to minimze the mistakes. New Orleans is not a more talented team than the Niners, they simply had zero turnovers and made a clutch drive when they had to. At this point I would give up the splashy Monday Night win for about 9-10 workmanlike victories. Once we're in, we could beat anybody, provided we play smart and protect the ball. We also need early leads. If we'd just jump to a 10 point lead on anyone, I think I defense can smother our opponent. Too many times we're trying to mount the second half dramatic comeback.
You make an excellent point here about that workmanlike wins thing.
This year, tThe Niner's need to win the games they should be winning. They should be winning against inferior teams at home and on the road, those games. They shouldn't be winning against a team like the Saints on Monday night...if they do..great, swell, nice bonus..but it doesn't mean s**t if you can't win the games you should win, if you don't win games like last week against Seattle. You gotta win the meat and potatoes games consistently before you can expect to be winning the dessert games...like the Saints on Monday night. You should be able to beat those who are not as good as you, consistently...you gotta be able to do that if you are going to be a good team. They have not been able to do that yet, and they need to start doing it NOW!

Yah that would be nice, but we just have to take what they give us.

I am concerned about this team. Good teams find ways to win close games, and it seems like we find ways to lose them.

Exactly!! There is a lot of football left and I it's amazes me how fast some are giving up on the Niners.
The fact is the team rallied and came within seconds of winning the game; that has to build confidence in the players. The Saints didn't beat the Niners, the Niners beat themselves........

lol comon now... serious?
Alex Smith played the game of his life, and we still found a way to beat ourselves. The 49ers blew their load last night, and I'm really not sure how much is left for Kansas City AND Atlanta on the road....then Michael Vick on Sunday Night Football.
You can take all the positives you want away from last night's game, but it was just another case of a random team fired up in front of the home crowd on National TV throwing the kitchen sink at the World Champs. The 49ers used to have to put up with chump games like this all the time. Teams that had no business making it close, playing their hearts out and making it a ballgame. In the end, they were still turds.
Nothing about last night has me convinced we've turned a corner. Arrowhead is going to be a nightmare on Sunday.

Some people have less intestinal fortitude than others.
The post above is a great example.

No moral victories in this game. If you can't hold onto the ball and keep turning it over, even the worst NFL team will beat you.
The Niners deserve no sympathy for their self inflicted wounds.

I think the other teams in the division will struggle (Seattle is paper thin) to win more than six games.

This improvement from game 1 to 2 was substantial. If we can not turn the ball over we will be fine.
KC will be a big test cuz historically the Niners dont do well in Arrowhead and it's prob louder than Seattle.
