It means that his hold on the starting job isn't as safe as he might think. It means that the "powers that be" are having second thoughts. It means Singletary is kicking Alex squarely in the keester.

That message is: "Get it done -- or sit down."

Best news I've heard all day. I like the new attitude coming from Niner Central.

you are reaching

You think so? I don't.

Val -- you just don't hand out reps to your third stringer "just because." There's a reason for the madness.

Remember -- the Niners parted ways with Smith's biggest supporter in McClueless. They have no loyalty to Alex whatsoever.

To me? Raye's announcement means they're still not sold on Smith. I wouldn't rule out a trade either dude. Like -- bringing someone new in.

yeah, you are reaching

It could mean that they are not "sold" on David Carr being the backup, They said he would get reps earlier in the game, not that he would be starting

Im not sure if he is reaching or not, but I hope this is whats going on at Niner central.

And i agree with you ninernation Miacco is falling of since joining comcast

MattB is da man right now

Maybe they are getting him ready for when Alex crashes and burns.

Well, in one game....Dixon played well & last preseason Nate Davis played well. But the idea is to see them against NFL players & on the camp guys. This is a good idea. But I would read to much into this.

the most amazing part is that they both seem to actually understand what that means

I would too Sus -- but Val has a VALID point.

I'm often accused of making mountains out of molehills. Not just here either.

We'll leave it at his assessment of "reaching" and leave it at that.

But one can dare to dream -- provided of course -- that Nate is no flash in the pan.

he's obviously reaching. Davis was headed to the PS squad last year, which means that the team thought, a year ago, that he was quite a ways from making a contribution. The fact that they kept him on the roster means that they see real promise in him, enough that they'd rather not risk losing him. The fact that he's been the 3rd QB with no chance to be the #2 or #1 means that they still think he needs to develop and don't trust him in games that count yet. The fact that they want to see him against better competition means that they want to get an assessment of where, exactly, his development is.

that's what the preseason is for. Anyone who thinks that this is a "shot across the bow" at Smith is obviously reaching. There is nothing that indicates that the team thinks Davis is a legit option at starting QB this season.

Matt Barrows: Raye wants to see Nate Davis take more meaningful snaps

Quote:
It needs to be pointed out right away that Nate Davis is not replacing/challenging Smith for the starting job. However, Raye said he'd like to see the heretofore No. 3 quarterback play against better competition and that he might enter the game earlier in the second and third preseason games. Said Raye: "The one ability that he has is highlighted in the parts of the game he plays in. Because if a guy is open, he'll hit him, he'll get the ball to them. He's another guy who's in a position where he needs to play early on against guys who have played in the NFL. He needs to play in that level. ... In the second and third exhibition game, we will experiment with some of that."

Cheat sheet: Stop s**tting the bed and listen to valrod (or anyone else with a sort of perspective).

Agreed
There was another guy mentioned in that article: Zeigler. Those of us who have tooted Ziggy's horn from day one are feeling just a bit validated at this point. I recall whenever one of us praised him, the sarcasm flowed with comments about just being TC fodder or practice squad material only. Well, it seems unanimous on the 9'ers, from teammates to coaches that he's the real deal. I would be very disappointed if he doesn't make the roster. He may not block as well as Morgan, but I think he makes a better receiving weapon; better hands, route running and speed. And probably more knowledgeable about the offense, judging from Smith's comments. Sure hope he sticks!
