Rating 49er’s Past GM’s, and possible next GM

We have had horrible GM’s for the last 33 years (except for Walsh/McVay = A+). McCloughan was actually the BEST GM we had during that time (except Walsh); which isn’t saying much. Clark, Policy and Donahue were so bad that many fans have lowered the bar very low and are easily pleased with an average GM. Therefore McCloughan seems good, compared to the mostly garbage GM’s that we had, even though he is average. However, I do think that McC is an excellent scout, he just ‘peter principled’ and he is over his head as GM.

McCloughan (2008-2010): C+/B-
Nolan (2005-2007): C
Donahue (~~2001-2004): D
Dwight Clark / Carmen Policy (~~1993-1998): D
Bill Walsh / McVay (~~1978-1994): A+
Joe Thomas (1977-78): F-

It’s bad timing, but after the draft, there will be many good GM candidates available. Here are ten mostly younger candidates ‘on the rise’:

Doug Whaley: Pro personnel coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Mark Dominik: Tampa Bay director of pro personnel
Brian Gaine: Assistant director of player personnel for the Miami Dolphins.
Scott Studwell: Director of college scouting for the Minnesota Vikings.
Steve Keim: AZ Cardinals player personnel director
Eric DeCosta: Ravens personnel man
John Schneider: Green Bay Packers football operations director
John Dorsey: Director of college scouting for the Green Bay Packers.
Ron Hughes: College scouting coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Marty Schottenheimer:

Donahue is definitely an F why give him a D at all. I guess you forgot Ericson hiring and the 2-14 season we had.

If a move is made I want the job to go to DeCosta. I saw him on NFL Network either last year or the year before, and he sounded like he know what he was talking about.

I agree. The Ravens have done very well draft.

In our history, yes. In the history of the NFL, not by a long shot.
I said this in the Scotty stepping down post,

pick whoever is on the Steelers short list to their next GM candidate. Emulate who you want to become. Functional Organization that wins SB = Steelers

I could see Alex becoming the next Eminem for sure... make it happen.
Exactly how do rate a future GM when one hasn't been hired yet?
which GM brought in Mark Roman? thats the GM that was the worst ever.
