aaaaand cool thread ruined

Actually, if the numbers projected for Alex Smith are accurate, and I don't think they are, I would rather bank on Nate Davis.

I don't think Alex will command that much money unless he becomes a good QB (not just average, but GOOD) that proves capable of leading this team to the playoffs. That's a lot of money to be dumping into an average QB and just because Jacksonville made the mistake doesn't mean we should do it as well. Garrard helped his team to the playoffs and then proceeded to rape the Jaguars. Alex has done nothing to warrant such a high amount and unless he starts looking like a top QB this season, I'd rather not dump all that cash into his lap. I don't think one good season (assuming he does well in 2010) is enough to invest that much in him again.

If he turns into a top-flight QB, cool. Pay him. But, if he just does well, I'd rather not pay that much.
sign patrick willis and vd and then worry about the rest. no way goldson gets anything close to collins's contract. wasn't he a pro bowler ?
I would not throw money at David Bass nor Manny Lawson they have not earn their money let them hit the market.
by the time there contracts are up im pretty sure we will have a youngster ready to fill in the void.
I read somewhere that the 49ers don't plan on resigning Bass, especially for that kind of money.

The problem I have with our FO is we are so unfamiliar with landing good talent through the draft that we reward our players with contracts of what we hope they WILL become, rather than what they currently are. Looking at players like Joe Staley, Parys Haralson, and even FA pickups like Brandon Jones: we paid them much more than what they've earned with their current play. Atleast in FA we can sign a bonafide pro bowl player. I'd rather have darren sproles than Brandon Jones and Demetric Evans, but combined we're paying those two more than anything a player like Sproles (or even Dunta Robinson for that matter) would command...

And this makes us different from the rest of the NFL does it?
Manny Lawson: 5yrs 20 Million with 8-10 Million guaranteed (Comparable to our very own Parys Haralson.)

David Baas: 6yrs 30 Mill with 12-14 Mill Guaranteed( Similar to the Justin Smiley Contract.)

those guys aren't worth that kind of money
yea, im not suprised. we have the best MLB and argueably the best TE in the league. and lets not forget that gore's contact will expire soon. AND, we have two 1st rounders this year. not suprised. we will be dishing the money soon.

Anyway, I agree on the 1st 3 players(Willis, VD and Dashon).

Disagree with Baas, he wont get that much and doesnt deserve it, and Manny better not expect 20M when he hasnt done anything yet.

Alex wise could demand alot if he proves himself, since he was 1st pick in 2005, and as for Aubrayo, 1 yr doesnt mean he is set as our NT, i like him, think he has been solid all 3 yrs he has been here, but only great in 2009, so i say the 1st 3 should be locked up ASAP. And then the others should get extended, only, if they prove it on the field.

Baas won't be resigned for that money. I bet Willis and Davis are the only people out of that list we keep. Franklin is good and deserves a contract but Manny, Baas and Goldson dot warrant big money yet. Lawson is basically a semi bust. Baas is a dissappointment. Goldson looked good but you don't get paid for doing ok as a starter.

idk how you get Lawson is a semi bust, just because he has a different skill set than we originally wanted, he is still worth the money, did you not see how our D played when Nolan kept him off the field???
Willis will probably demand the highest LB payment yet, but, I wouldn't be suprised if he gets extended before the season starts. Mc has the belief that you extend your young players early(he probably will pay less for a 3 time pro bowler instead of a 4 - which he most certainly will be).

VD - If Mc doesn't extend him expect a front loaded incentive laden contract. My guess is that he'd probably expect a Fitzgerald type of contract more than Dallas Clark simply because of his explosive playmaking ability.

Goldson had a solid year and will progress next season with a full offseason as a starter and film of himself to watch. He's a player I hope Mc extends this offseason simply because he is a rising star on the defense and if they wait to extend him it will be much more expensive.

Baas - no way they resign him for Smiley money. They might throw some incentives into his contract that would give it a possibility for that kind of contract but with his injury past and inconsistent play... no way. Plus, Baas was the guy who they had for cheaper than smiley.

Lawson - I think with Lawson it depends on two things.
1. The progression of Ahmad Brooks. Does Brooks show he can be a 3 down OLB or be a pass rush specialist? Does Lawson every produce more than a handful of sacks a year to compete with Brooks/Harylson.

2. Does a rookie make a big impact at the position. We're going to pick up an OLB/DE type in the draft so it depends on how that guy turns out.
Lawson led the team in sacks, 1.5 more than Harylson and had 23 more tackles. Lawson proved very valuable against the run, think back to the game against the Vikings and how many times you saw Lawson setting the edge.

Franklin is certainly worth the money. We've been stout against the run for quite a while because of those 3 guys up front, Franklin, Smith, and Sopoaga. We as fans only pay attention to those guys when they make a tackle or get their name's mentioned by the commentators. But, Willis and Spikes wouldn't make nearly as many plays without those guys. I played MLB with both good and bad DT and it makes a world of difference. If you watched NFL playbook much every once in a while they'd showcase Franklin's grunt work where he was occupying 2 and sometimes 3 lineman so that Spikes and Willis could go to work.

If we sign David Baas for that much money I will personally go shoot McCloughan in the face.
Lawson and Baas should be payed nothing but backup money.

Neither of them are a high priority to re-sign IMO.

I agree with Niners99 that Davis shouldn't get Dallas Clark money yet. A good contract? Yes. But definitely not near Clark money.

Goldson is not worth $5M/year. That's ridiculous. The franchise tag for a S is just over $6M.

There's no way that Baas deserves 6yrs 30 Mill with 12-14 Mill Guaranteed.
