Coach Mike Singletary announced Monday that Alex Smith will take over as the 49ers' starting quarterback beginning in Week 8.
It's a deserved promotion after Smith nearly engineered a comeback win after replacing Shaun Hill at halftime of Sunday's game at Houston. Smith's superior arm strength adds a new dimension to San Francisco's offense, which ideally would use the run to set up vertical passes. Four of the Niners' next four games are against potent pass defenses (Week 8 @ IND, Week 10 vs. CHI, Week 11 @ GB), however. Consider Smith a low-end QB2 pickup. Oct. 26 - 3:22 pm et
