We Signed Pashos !!

Woot, woot!!!

Sheeesh, I wish we coulda just got this guy from the get-go rather than go through this roller-coaster of O-line emotions - we don't draft a RT, we sign an injury-plagued yet Pro-Bowl caliber RT, he retires, we're one injury away from playing a matador at RT (Sims), then, finally...sweet RELIEF!!!

I REALLY like our trio of Staley - Heitmann - Pashos (assuming he beats out Snyder after a few weeks). And, damn, if Baas and Rachal end up being the "maulers" we drafted them as, we could just end up running the ball 55-60% of the time...

AWESOME. Now Hill gets a whole extra two seconds to hold onto the ball before getting sacked.

Last season, I said we were very lucky to have signed Sims, who we desperately needed; and despite the fact that he gets bull rushed very easily, we had nothing after him so we were still lucky.

I will say it again, despite what anyone might think of Pashos, we are very very lucky to have gotten this guy at the 11th hour.

Sorry, but Sims having to fill in for 6-7 games would have derailed our season.

Sims is actually very good against a 3-4 defense, because he is good at blocking quick, small linebackers. But he is terrible at blocking 270+ lb defensive ends; just horrible.

Perhaps if Snyder is out, we can use Pashos against 4-3 teams, and Sims against 3-4 teams.
Sounds a little "video game like," but I swear it would actually work out.

i think the reason for keeping sims is cause he will help in case of a injury, id rather have 4 OT's, then 3 OT's on the team, personally id rather us get another vet, but oh well.

Two things:

1) The Martz offense has a history of giving up sacks.
2) Snyder practiced at GUARD throughout all of training camp last season. The poor guy is thrown in at RT and expected to play like he was there all along.

This season Snyder has actually practiced at the same position he is actually going to play during the season. Singletary is a genius.

Now he has a chance to finally show he is a player.

Don't expect newly signed 49ers T Tony Pashos to be satisfied with being a backup. He's started 47 of 48 games the past three years, including all 16 last season with Jacksonville. Pashos signed a one-year contract and will be aiming to overtake starter Adam Snyder at RT so he can showcase himself for his free-agent season in 2010.

Very solid pick-up..... We added much needed depth on th O line....

He is a good player and a good signing.

really a great signing. at worst, it gives us depth at a thin position. at best, it gives us an experienced starter.

I hope Snyder has a good, healthy season, but if he doesn't, I feel so much better with Pashos on the team than having to settle for Sims.

Wow did we do the right thing. With this front office of noobs and business people not football people I have no idea. The front office hasn't successfully addressed the teams true needs for the past five years, the Marvel Smith signing, the Crabtree drafting, the Alex Smith signing. I just don't think they "mgmt" does their fair share of homework.

Whenever a team loses a potential starter, those comments become all too common. I remember the forum blasting JPeterson when he left us for Seattle. Even when Beasley as well as others left, we kind of gave that "good riddens" attitude. They lost a potential starter. We gained one for relatively cheap.

+ 1 for us.

Dude, that never happened. There might have been 2 or 3 guys happy that we traded Julian Peterson, but there's no way a majority ever said anything like that.

I disagree. Two reasons:

1. $4.9MILLION is NOT a lot of money for a starting OT in this league.

2. If he were so good, why did Jacksonville draft TWO offensive tackles. Monroe, the #8 pick in the draft will cost more than Pashos. Eben Britton, picked in the second round, will be no bargain either.

Sorry, the facts suggest Pashos was not the quality starter some are suggesting he might be. He has substantial flaws in his game for a guy that has been in the league 7 years.

It was a cap move. Pashos had been moved to guard after they draft the Monroe and Britton and he didn't want to take the pay cut that entailed being moved, not to mention they were overcrowded at the tackle position. He played solid at RT last season. Taking Britton and putting him at RT won't cost as much as keeping Pashos contract. Tony is a stud but he is one hell of an upgrade over Sims that is forsure.

I stand by my comment that the Jags would not have drafted the way they did if they felt Pashos was all that good. However, it isn't worth a big debate because the 49ers clearly needed to pick up another OT before the league started and they got one. The fact Foerster is familiar with him is a plus. Whether he starts, is a backup, is better/worse than Sims, I could care less at this point.

It is clear McCloughan was doing his homework. He figured out Pashos might become available based on the draft picks. He followed the progress during practice games. He scouted him last Thursday night...and signed him. It looks like that will prove to be a good strategy.
