Nolan wasn't so different in wanting to establish a smash-mouth philosophy. It simply never seemed to work, presumably because the OL simply couldn't push defenses back and Gore, as hard as he hits the line, just doesn't have the ability that even some lesser players have of being able to punch it in.
Sing has shuffled the line some and is counting on attitude to make a difference. It might be that, plus Coffee and Norris, might make it more successful. Also, the emergence of Davis as a receiver should keep defenses more honest.
