what happens on 3rd & short

is going to define our season. Since we are going to be a running team many would assume we will call for a fair amount of runs on third and short. I'm gonna suggest that we will not be all that successful if we try this. Why? Because unlike the cowboys with emmet smith running behind kevin gogan and larry allen with a lead block by johnson we just dont have anyone on the o-line who can absolutely dominate even when the other team knows were gonna run. The difference between a td and a fg on the 1 yd line will be our play call on 3rd down. What im saying is we will get stuffed on plays where the other team puts 11 men on the line often enough that it will affect our season. So play action plays that threaten gore up the middle then end up a bootleg or a pass to the tight end or pass to a wide receiver that went in motion then runs parallel to the goal line(how many tds did jerry rice score on that play?) are the plays we better be practicing and have down pat. Some teams will have undersized d-lines that we will dominate like the seahawks but others wont. we should be prepared to run 60% of our third and short plays as play action pass plays unless we have already proved in the game that our opponet really cant stop us running. If you disagree with me, what % of runs would you call at the goal line? on third and short?

I want to see alot of play action to Vernon for a touchdown or 1st down. I'm tired of watching Gates & Gonzales getting these all the time & we have our own weapon who is blocking all the time!

Probably. On 3rd and shorts at, for example, the 41 yard line, and the first down is the 40, Coffee gets the handoff. But you're right about goalline carries. I just hope we don't give it to Robinson like we did last year in Arizona

FWIW, we lead the league in 3rd down conversions during preseason.

frank gore won't get goal line carries! the year he made it into the probowl in 2006 and rushed for 1,695 yards. he only scored 8 times. was never really used that year in goal line situations. my predictions are either coffee or norris!

i thinkn we have the line to run it. i just think we will struggle against 3-4 teams where snydr and staley have to block a DT, and i don't know if rachal can dominate a good-great NT.
but, most teams, we will have no problem running over the RG. rachal is a mauler, and it will soon be like running behind allen when we dominated in 06.

LOL! It IS only preseason.
That said, I ran through the sortable stats on CBS.com and there are some encouraging signs - we are near the top of the league in rushing, rushing yards per attempt, rush d, third down conversions and turnover ratio - all things that tend to lead to success.
Encouraging.
