I think this is a big boost for our secondary. People forget before we got Clements, Spencer was our 1 and Harris our 2. I think it is huge to have him back in the nickel slot, and is gunna be a big difference in our secondary.
I wouldnt be surprised if he challenges Walt for that 2 spot.

Spencer cannot play the slot receiver. He never has. He's not quick enough. When Spencer has played in the nickle package, Walt Harris moves inside to cover the slot receiver and Spencer provides the more traditional CB coverage on one of the outside receivers. Spencer's strength is his height at the CB position, and he is an effective blitzer from the CB position (ask Jon Kitna).
Spencer has accumulated a series of significant time-lost injuries over the last few years. He was healthier earlier in his career. Spencer also seemed to regress under Nolan's defensive schemes, which emphasized not getting beat deep, as opposed to playing tight coverage, which could better generate turnovers and incompletions.
Tarrell Brown has his own durability concerns, But I sense that Brown may have passed-up Spencer as the nickle back, if both were 100% healthy. Spencer may be competing more with Marcus Hudson and Reggie Smith, as the dime back, now that Goldson has been elevated to starter at FS.

I just like reading your posts agree or disagree it's always well thought out with good insight.

Spencer's play fell off due to injuries:
3 injuires over the past 3 years: foot, quad, knee
Hopefully he just bounces back AND Carlisle and the conditioning program can give us a healthy rotation of CBs (as already mentioned above).
But ... we should pick up another one in the Draft. Reloading thru the Draft is always a smart move.

Spencer is too inconsistent to rely upon.

He's not terrible, but as ezrider points out - inconcistent. If people want him as a #2 to replace Walt Harris, be prepared for the smell of roasted cornerback more often.

I like Spencer, but I think he'll get beat out for the slot by Brown. This is a critical year for him to prove he can be a starter. This is most likely Harris' last year and he needs to prove he can crack the starting lineup again.
This year, as long as no injuries occur he's good depth at best.

His play was falling off before all the injuries. After that contract he got lazy.
