Is Battle really worth a roster spot at this point?

Can we start a new one tomorrow? We need more of these. I demand a new one every day!!!! Rally, people!

As I've said for maybe the 3,000th time now (this will make it the 3,001st time, until a new anti-Battle thread starts in about....2 days), Battle was the leading receiver on this team in 2008 before his injury. And, he wasn't even the starter last season. NO!!!!!!!IT CAN'T BE TRUE!!!!!!!!THE HORROR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

While it is true that this season may finally catch up to Battle, every year far too many, how do I say this nicely....oh, I better leave it blank... board members cheer for his demise. And every year, the ghosts of Niners receivers from the past are added to the list. Meanwhile, Battle is like a cockroach in the nuclear holocaust. Shouldn't the board walk gently on this subject. Battle has made many look like a fool.

The Ghost of Niners Receivers Past: Antonio Bryant, Darrell Jackson, Ashley Lelie, Bryant Johnson.

I would like to understand why Battle has become the object of scorn by so many board members. It is really the....oh, I better not say it again.... thing. The guy was a late-round draftee, he busts his rear every game, he is an outstanding blocker, a team leader, a really good guy, and yet...this constant cheering for his demise is really odd.

Since I do not have access to a brain scan on the individuals who cheer for his release, can someone help me comprehend this hate. I seriously have never understood it all of these years. Is there a neurologist in the house?

Fact check: One poster incorrectly stated in this thread that Battle only caught one ball after Singletary became the coach. The correct number is three, and it was in the one game before he went down with an injury. Singletary became a head coach on October 20, 2008, and Battle's last game before injury was October 26, 2008.

Already going through withdrawals for the newest anti-Battle thread. Someone, please don't let me suffer.

Cheers.

Belly up to the bar, baby!
Do the team a favor and not waste away someone who may be useful to us.

It is very conceivable that Battle will lose out, but you never know what will happen until the season starts. Some team may realize the lack of talent at their WR position & decide to trade with us. Or, god forbid, a WR may come down with an injury.
the counter point is that battle is a good return man and is needed there.. at least as a backup.

Up to week 8
Battle
24 318 13.2 36 0
Bruce
23 399 17.4 63 4

And that's after JTO didn't throw to Bruce in the first game.
And don't give me that s**t about him not being a starter.
Martz had 3 or 4 WR in on almost every play, and with Morgan recovering from the staph infection, Battle saw plenty of time.

And Sing took over mid week against Seattle, so you can't really expect much change when the guy is only in charge for less then a week

1 rec vs 3 rec WOW that is the difference between average and average. Great job pointing that out.

And for the record, i don't think anyone has shown hate on Battle. It seems this is more of a Thank you for your service thread. Battle is good, but the people around him are just (getting) better, while Battle is not.

I don't think people are "cheering for his demise" but some feel his performance does not warrant a roster spot over Morgan, Hill, Jones and Bruce. it also appears McSing feel's the same way seeing they signed Jones in F/A and drafted Crabtree #1 overall.

Don't you think it would be a good idea to develop the young guys and get them some live game experience? I think we improved last year with Hill and Morgan in the lineup. Do you disagree? and don't get me wrong I think he has been very clutch for us in the past but he's been with us for 7 years he may also need a change of address to reach his potential, but unfortunatley I just don't see where he fits on the roster.........No hate nothing but the truth.
Id rather have Battle here than Ziegler quite honestly.

We already know what we are going to get out of him. I won't shed one tear when he get's cut. (if he does)

Can we just say NO to the cut(insert player) here mentality?

It's mind numbingly tired to say the least.

COMPETITION is what makes a team better.

The list of players mentioned in THIS thread, have YET to show they warrant that respect. Morgan and Hill played fairly well when they got on the field last year but that could be nothing more than a fluke. Remember Stokes? Guy showed that he COULD do the job when Rice went down and after that wasn't nearly as solid as he was in '97.

You're asking for Stokes 2.0 with this attitude of cutting players because we have solid bodies ON PAPER.

Let them earn their spots just like each and every year Battle has EARNED his. I cannot believe that this even has to be said to a Football fan let alone a 9er fan. But yet here we are and people make stupid threads supporting an idea that is counter productive to Football and to this team.

Sheesus William Mary and Joseph people can be so damn myopic.

WOW I can not believe the genuine hate for Battle, what has he ever done to deserve it, sure he has never been a pro-bowler but not everyone is!

Battle has played on one of the crappiest teams in the NFL and never spoke out never complained, always a true professional.

Battle has had to learn multiple offenses, something that has earned A Smith a pass on his out right failure.

Battle has caught passes from some of the most pathetic excuses for QBs to ever wear a 49er uniform, and never complained never laid blame never made excuses.

Battle is a quality "role player" but not a super star, ever wonder how much better he would look as the 3rd or 4th receiver on the Patriots?

Battle would be a hero for he selfless blocking in if he only played in Pittsburgh!

When and if Battle is cut it will simply be about the numbers not about his performance.

Battle will play in this league somewhere, I only hope he plays in front of knowledgeable football fans who appreciate him.

Battle may never be in the hall of fame but he is far from a loser.

Go pick on some one who really sucks but if you knew football you would not find all that much negative to say about Battle.

I agree with you there I just don't see us resigning Battle after this season. So maybe this is his last year as a 49er.

Wow...I don't see why everyone is so emotional over this guy......but I hear you on him competing for a roster spot, I respect that argument. Who do you think gets cut? How many rec. do you think we keep? I don't think it's counter productive to discuss our possible roster moves...I mean for pete's sake it's the offseason.....lol.....what else are we going to discuss....

Man I think if Bruce retired Battle had a better chance to make the team but taking into consideration of: Potential, Age, Monetary investment.....it's not far fetch to believe the niners may part ways with him....I mean we are about to invest a lot of Money into Crabtree and it's not to sit on the bench.
