As for the D-line, I would keep Jean-Francois over D. Evans.

DL
- Smith, Sopoaga, Franklin, Balmer, Jean-Francois

You only have 5 DL, we're def keeping 6 IMO I think RJF and Evans stay. Especially until R.Mcdonald comes back.

We run a 3 man line, we would have a good enough rotation with Franklin and Sopoaga or Balmer filling in at the Nose. Not to mention RJF could fill in anywhere on the line. Mitchell could always be kept on the practice squad if needed.

What would be the sense in keeping 6 D-lineman??

Depth in case of injury . . . same reason we keep 8 or 9 o-linemen. It's brutal in the trenches.

I'm not sure many teams would pluck Davis off the PS. Reason being he would count against their final 53 and the time he would need to learn their playbook with his dyslexia wouldn't make it worth the effort. I see him being safe for now.

It's too much of a risk. This kid looks legit. I'd rather cut Smith or Huard.

He's looked legit in 1 preseason game, Huard has actual vet experience.

Last year we kept 6 D-lineman, and for what we didn't need them. Balmer of course is a given even though he didn't contribute last year. Fields, hardly saw any time in the rotation and basically could have used this spot to elevate Clayton for more playing time due to Gores injuries. McDonald came in on passing downs. So basically you really only had Sopoaga, Smith, Franklin and McDonald contributing last year, Balmer was pretty much the floater. Keeping 5 D-lineman on the active roster really free's up space in a much needed area like OLB, we could always have Khalif Mitchell hidden away on the practice squad.

Please, cut Roman's slow as mollasses, non-instinctive butt!

Now don't sugar-coat it, man......let us know how you really feel!
If Roman is on the squad i swear i will vommit.

We should try and get a 4th or 5th rounder for Jason Hill (3rd rd. pick), and keep Zeigler or that dude Spurlock around.

I'm tired of seeing slow ass Ulbrich miss tackles too.

Re-set on the final roster discussion going into the all important third pre-season game.

After accounting for specialists Lee, Nedney & Jennings we have 50 roster spots open for offense & defense. Between each side of the ball I think we have the following list of 41 who are locks to make the final 53:

Offense (22)
OL (8): Staley, Snyder, Baas, Heitmann, Rachal, M. Smith, Wragge & Wallace
QB (2): Hill & A. Smith
TE (3): Davis Walker & Pascoe
RB (4): Gore, Coffee, Norris & Robinson
WR (5): Bruce, Morgan, Jones, Battle & Crabtree

Defense (19)
DL (5): Franklin, Soapoaga, Evans, J. Smith & Balmer.
ILB (4): Willis, Spikes, McKillop & Ulbrich
OLB (3): Haralson, Lawson & Brooks
S (3): Lewis, Goldson & R. Smith
CB (4): Clements, Bly, Brown & Spencer

****************************************************************

The Bubble

After accounting for the locks we have 9 spots in question:

Offense (Keep 3 or 4)
OL (4): Sims, Boone, Howard & Spanos – (Keep 0 or 1)
QB (2): Huard & N. Davis – (Keep 1 or 2)
RB (2): Sheets & Miller – (Keep 0 or 1)
WR (3): Hill, Spurlock & Zeigler – (Keep 0 or 1)

Defense (Keep 5 or 6)
DL (3): Jean-Francios, Mitchell & Egboh – (Keep 0 or 1)
ILB (2): Washington & Roland – (Keep 0 or 1)
OLB (3): Moore, Harris & Briggs – (Keep 1 or 2)
S (2): Roman & Taylor – (Keep 1)
CB (3): Green, Hudson & Rossum – (Keep 2 or 3)

****************************************************************

Final Keepers

Offense: Huard, N. Davis & Sheets (+ Hill until Crabtree signs)

Defense: Jean-Francios, Moore, Harris, Roman

Final 53 Man Roster

Offense (25)
OL (8): Staley, Snyder, Baas, Heitmann, Rachal, M. Smith, Wragge & Wallace
QB (4): Hill, A. Smith, Huard & N. Davis

OLB (5): Haralson, Lawson, Brooks, Moore & Harris
S (4): Lewis, Goldson, R. Smith & Roman
CB (6): Clements, Bly, Brown, Spencer, (Green or Hudson) & Rossum (KR)

Practice Squad (8)
OL: Boone, Spanos & Howard

WR: Zeigler

Final thoughts

- I think we could go with eight on the o-line unless we were hit there by injuries, at which time we could whack an OLB or QB.

- I think one of the final roster calls could be whether we keep Jay Moore or Jason Hill.

Tear it up!

You're definitely close, Sonoco......pretty realistic. I've just got a few comments. Agree with all the locks on defense but I'm not sure if Battle and Pascoe are locks on offense. I think Battle has stiff competition and Pascoe hasn't played well enough to lock a spot just yet. He could start the year on the practice squad.

The problem with this year's team (and it is the good kind of problem to have) is that Zeigler, Sheets, Boone, and RJF have all shown too much to risk running them through waivers to put on the PS. You run a real risk of losing any of them if you do. N Davis and Taylor might even fall into this category but I don't think so. I think these two will end up on the PS. Ziggy would be lost for certain and that would suck. The guy can play. Boone and RJF look like they have some real talent and would also probably be picked up. I think Sheets makes the team because he just adds a new dimension to the offense.

Does that mean you have to have all of these guys on the final roster? I don't know, frankly. This is why I think guys like Battle, Hudson, J Moore, and Roman may have a real problem making this team. In any case, that PS is going to have some good players on it too.....bodes well for the future. Good thread lads....

Just reading those dates gave me butterflies! I'm really excited to see who out of the players that we have to choose from actually make the team.

GO NINERS!
I'm going to suggest something heretical: I don't see Norris as a lock. I'd like to see a starting backfield of Gore and Coffee. This will make teams honest by not keying on Frank. Coffee showed he can block.

There are some guys that we overpaid just to get them signed. Moran Norris is one of them. Consider him a lock.

Here's my prediction:

Offense (26)
OL (8): J. Staley, D. Baas, E. Heitmann, C. Rachal, A. Snyder, M. Smith, T. Wragge & C. Wallace (Honorable Mention: B. Sims, A. Boone)
QB (4): S. Hill, A. Smith, D. Huard & N. Davis
TE (3): V. Davis, D. Walker & B. Pascoe
RB (5): F. Gore, G. Coffee, M. Norris, M. Robinson & K. Sheets
WR (6): I. Bruce, J. Morgan, B. Jones, A. Battle, M. Crabtree & J. Hill (Honorable Mention: M. Spurlock, D. Ziegler)

Defense (24)
DL (6): I. Sopoaga, A. Franklin, J. Smith, D. Evans, K. Balmer & R. Jean-Francois
ILB (4): P. Willis, T. Spikes, S. McKillop & J. Ulbrich
OLB (4): P. Haralson, M. Lawson, A. Brooks, M. Harris
CB (6): N. Clements, D. Bly, T. Brown, S. Spencer, E. Green & A. Rossum (Honorable Mention: M. Hudson)
S (4): M. Lewis, D. Goldson, R. Smith & M. Roman (Honorable Mention: C. Taylor)

Special Teams (3)
P: A. Lee
K: J. Nedney
LS: B. Jennings

- There are going to be some tough roster cuts either way. Take a look at the guys that get honorable mention... I'd really like to see some of them still remain with the team.

Good list. It brings up the question of who are the 8 weekly inactives?
One guess: Huard, N. Davis, Sheets, Pascoe, Wallace, J. Hill, Green, RJF
for the Jason Hill detractors....the guy has caught all of his passes I believe and has also extended drives on 3rd down........I would rather see him get more playing time than Arnez Battle.....

and Brandon Jones isn't even back yet....we have alot of receivers.

there is no need to over pay for Crabtree.

I'm no GM....but I mean....I'm just thinking about the cap money we would save that we can invest in a safety next year and also in extending current players who have proved themselves.

I know some believe there will be a CAP free year soon enough....but I don't think so.

also I don't really like that #57 LB guy.......I feel #54 (Harris I believe) looks better out there.

edit- yeah I mean #47 Briggs
