Call me crazy but I think Alex gets cut if he doesnt win the starting job. Huard is probably a better backup and we cant leave Davis unprotected on the PS. I think we need other positions to greatly to keep 4 QBs...

I'm not sure many teams would pluck Davis off the PS. Reason being he would count against their final 53 and the time he would need to learn their playbook with his dyslexia wouldn't make it worth the effort. I see him being safe for now.

Why wouldn't we cut Huard instead? Alex is continuing to develop and he's getting paid backup money. If all else fails, we can resign Huard at any time as an emergency QB.

Also, does anyone know the PS procedure? If we put Davis on the PS and someone tries to add him to their 53-man, do we have first dibs to add him first?

I agree with your thinking... Alex isn't going anywhere this season.

To your question, I'm fairly certain that it doesn't work that way. I have heard of situations where the team possessing a PS player gets "tipped off" of another team's interest... so they quickly make room for the PS player. I don't believe we can "match or better" an offer though. What someone said about the dyslexia (or whatever disability it is) is a great point to why a team wouldn't pluck him to find room on their 53 man roster.

I like the way you categorized the locks from the bubble players, OP... have to go back and look to see what I'd do there.

Re-set on the final roster discussion going into the all important third pre-season game.

After accounting for specialists Lee, Nedney & Jennings we have 50 roster spots open for offense & defense. Between each side of the ball I think we have the following list of 41 who are locks to make the final 53:

Offense (22)
OL (8): Staley, Snyder, Baas, Heitmann, Rachal, M. Smith, Wragge & Wallace
QB (2): Hill & A. Smith
TE (3): Davis Walker & Pascoe
RB (4): Gore, Coffee, Norris & Robinson
WR (5): Bruce, Morgan, Jones, Battle & Crabtree

Defense (19)
DL (5): Franklin, Soapoaga, Evans, J. Smith & Balmer.
ILB (4): Willis, Spikes, McKillop & Ulbrich
OLB (3): Haralson, Lawson & Brooks
S (3): Lewis, Goldson & R. Smith
CB (4): Clements, Bly, Brown & Spencer

****************************************************************

The Bubble

After accounting for the locks we have 9 spots in question:

Offense (Keep 3 or 4)
OL (4): Sims, Boone, Howard & Spanos – (Keep 0 or 1)
QB (2): Huard & N. Davis – (Keep 1 or 2)
RB (2): Sheets & Miller – (Keep 0 or 1)
WR (3): Hill, Spurlock & Zeigler – (Keep 0 or 1)

Defense (Keep 5 or 6)
DL (3): Jean-Francios, Mitchell & Egboh – (Keep 0 or 1)
ILB (2): Washington & Roland – (Keep 0 or 1)
OLB (3): Moore, Harris & Briggs – (Keep 1 or 2)
S (2): Roman & Taylor – (Keep 1)
CB (3): Green, Hudson & Rossum – (Keep 2 or 3)

****************************************************************

Final Keepers

Offense: Huard, N. Davis & Sheets (+ Hill until Crabtree signs)

Defense: Jean-Francios, Moore, Harris, Roman

Final 53 Man Roster

ILB (4): Willis, Spikes, McKillop & Ulbrich
OLB (5): Haralson, Lawson, Brooks, Moore & Harris
S (4): Lewis, Goldson, R. Smith & Roman
CB (6): Clements, Bly, Brown, Spencer, (Green or Hudson) & Rossum (KR)

Special Teams (3)
P: Lee

Final thoughts

- I think we could go with eight on the o-line unless we were hit there by injuries, at which time we could whack an OLB or QB.

- I think one of the final roster calls could be whether we keep Jay Moore or Jason Hill.

Tear it up!

i do not think ulbrich and battle are locks, while i think both can and wll make the team, i still do not think they are locks. ulbrich does almost nothing a rookie can't do. then battle, he does alot, but if hill shows he can be valuable i think he will stay in battles place.

He re-negotiated his contract so he could stick around and make the "Ten-Year" wall at Niner HQ. Unless one of the Rookies blows his doors off I think the organization will show some loyalty and Ulbrich makes the squad . . . and the Ten Year wall.

yeah, that is why i think he makes the team. but if mckillop, biggs, and harris make themselves too valuable, i think they cut him. but i could also see them IRing someone, or PUPing someone to keep him.

I'd rather keep Hudson over Roman. Hudson can help out at both Safety and Corner.

Safeties: Lewis, Goldson, Smith, Taylor

Corners:
Clements, Bly, Brown, Spencer, Green, Hudson

As for the D-line, I would keep Jean-Francois over D. Evans.

DL
- Smith, Sopoaga, Franklin, Balmer, Jean-Francois

Final 53 Man Roster

Offense (26)
OL (9): Staley, Snyder, Baas, Heitmann, Rachal, M. Smith, Wragge, Boone, Wallace
QB (3): Hill, A. Smith, N. Davis
TE (3): V. Davis Walker & Pascoe
RB (5): Gore, Coffee, Norris, Robinson & Sheets
WR (6): Bruce, Morgan, Jones, Battle, Crabtree & Hill

Defense (24)
DL (5): Sopoaga, Evans, J. Smith, Balmer & Jean-Francios
ILB (4): Willis, Spikes, McKillop & Ulbrich
OLB (5): Haralson, Lawson, Brooks, Moore & Harris
S (4): Lewis, Goldson, R. Smith & Hudson (CB/S)
CB (6): Clements, Bly, Brown, Spencer, Green, Rossum (KR)

Special Teams (3)
P: Lee
PK: Nedney
LS: Jennings

Practice Squad (8)
OL: Bender (if eligible) or Howard
OLB: Briggs
WR: Zeigler
S: Taylor
FB: Miller
DL: Mitchell (NT)
QB: possibly Nate Davis, if he plays poorly in the next 2 weeks

PUP (1)
DE: McDonald

* People may think I'm nuts over some choices. This is not how I expect it to go, but what I would do.

- Hudson slides to safety/CB backup... dumping Roman
- Dumping/trading Aubrayo Franklin... just don't think enough of him
- N. Davis or Huard just depends on the next 2 weeks
- I don't think enough of TE Finley, so replaced with an impressive Mitchell on PS
- Really want Boone on that 53 man roster... he'll be well worth it someday soon
- I would like to keep J Hill... even though it means 6 total WRs

You only have 5 DL, we're def keeping 6 IMO I think RJF and Evans stay. Especially until R.Mcdonald comes back.
Excellent thread.

Oldman: with Franklin gone and Mitchell on PS I am curious as to who are you starting at NT and who is the depth? Balmer?

Any person on the practice squad is fair game for any tema to sign. Like in any siutation though where an agent is trying to get his client signed he will always try to drive up the proce for his client. SO basically if Davis was to get interest from another team I believe the agent, in the interest of doing his job, would give the niners a chance to add him for more money. So yes, 99 times out of 100, you have a chance to keep your own player but there is no rule that states you have to have first re-fusal.

With that said I think Nate goes on the PS because he has a earnin g disability and I doubt any one will think he can contribute this year.

As for the roster predictions I think they are pretty good. Except I think we keep 8 lineman 7 recievers including Spurlock and Hill and only three QB's. I think we keep so many recievers because next year Battle, Rossum and Bruce will be gone and I think the staff is smitten by Spurlocks speed and return ability. So I think they stash Ziegler and Davis on the PS for as long as they can and adjust accordinly mid-year if necessary and based on record. Just my opinion though.

We run a 3 man line, we would have a good enough rotation with Franklin and Sopoaga or Balmer filling in at the Nose. Not to mention RJF could fill in anywhere on the line. Mitchell could always be kept on the practice squad if needed.

What would be the sense in keeping 6 D-lineman??
