- Kaep: If he starts, it will be interesting to see how Jim manages him because he's limited with his pass game understanding and he's not discipline in the pocket, he was a little lost as a drop back passer, he did not read his progressions at all. This is all expected due to his experience.
Kaep is limited? does he shop here too?
Gawd I stopped listening to Cossell after he labeled the Lions contenders(all because of Staffords arm)...and us pretenders.
Really? He said he is limited with his understanding, not his ability.
No one doubts his physical ability. That was a given before he was drafted. The issue was, and still is, can he learn to play the pro game. Cossell mentioned two keys to keep in mind in evaluating his future:
First, pocket discipline. It is one thing to be able to run on designed plays, however, that is not the same as having pocket discipline and awareness. Peyton Manning has great pocket awareness and discipline (especially this season when he is being very careful to get rid of the ball before he takes a hit). CK has yet to demonstrate that kind of awareness. He may learn it but it clearly isn't there now.
Second, understanding the offense. While he did appear to adjust a couple of calls and blocking assignments, he did not appear to have good recognition of the post-snap situation. His uncertainty in going through his progressions was apparent. So while that is something that we would expect him to learn in time, it is not there yet, whether he will get it or not is still an open question.
The other part of this is the fact that the OL clearly does not appear to spend as much time working on pass protection as run blocking. These guys are studs at run blocking but the shape and consistency of the pass pocket is often sub-par, consequently Kaepernick's learning curve in pocket discipline will be dependent on the OL developing the feel for how to create a consistent pocket.
