Yep, that'd be a good way to counteract it...just sayin', as of now, it's quite brilliant.

Oh really? This is a dumb idea? Why don't you tell that to the architect of the greatest defense in NFL history, Buddy Ryan, who did just that:

Schmons, you stated that a spike takes one second off the clock, max - what do u mean "max"?? Have you EVER seen a spike that DIDN'T take a second off the clock? It would take off AT LEAST a second but most of the time 2 or 3 seconds come off the clock. And if there's 7 or 8 seonds left, maybe they have time for 2 hail mary's...by eliminating a couple ticks, now maybe they only have time for 1.

SportsFan, why don't YOU learn the rules of football first. What did I say that demonstrated a lack of knowledge of the rules. If you think that the more guys you have on the field, the bigger the penalty, you are wrong. Whether you have 12 men on the field or 12 million, it's still just a 5 yard penalty.

You took someone comment as proof that Buddy Ryan came up with this. Plus the comment makes it seem like the game ended on that play. Which isn't possible.

And the point of the article is that it doesn't matter how many people you put out. Not that you can do it over and over as that wouldn't work.

Make 12 men on the field a presnap penalty like a false start so teams can't do this. It's fair to teams who get caught with an honest mistake of that 12th guy running off the field by not giving up a free untimed down and the teams like billacheat who bend the rules can't take advantage of a loophole in the system to effectively screw the offense out of a crucial play.
It helped NYG decrease the clock from 20 something seconds to 14, didn't it? They need to reset the clock on defensive penalties under 2 minutes.

I get what your saying... but a team could just throw underneath right..?.. and same time get a timeout for a defensive penalty

Still to the defense's advantage if you're throwing underneath and using up precious seconds when there are only a few seconds left and you need a touchdown. Besides, assuming you get more than 5 yards on the underneath pass, the penalty wouldn't even be accepted and then it's irrelevant anyways.

But the clock would still stop even if the penalty was declined, no ?

When there's under like 30 seconds or so and the only thing that will beat you is a hail mary, you might as well just have extra defenders on the field to guard against the hail mary and eat up clock and then just accept the 5 measly, irrelevant yards that you will be penalized. Hell, don't stop at 12 guys, the penalty is the same regardless of how many extra guys you have on the field. You seriously literally might as well have all 45 guys that dressed on the field. Same with on the goalline. If you're up 9 or more with like 30 seconds left and the other team has it on the 1 yard line. If you play them straight up, they could get a TD and then have time to maybe recover an onside kick with a few plays to get in FG range. But if you just have tons of extra guys on the field to stop a TD, you keep conceding the 5 inch half the distance to the goal penalty while not allowing a TD until the last play of regulation and then you win.

Seriously? This is nothing new, they've been doing this for a long time, hell Buddy Ryan had plays setup just for a goalline situation with like 10 seconds left on the clock.
Tom placed that Hail Mary pretty good.

If GimpyGronk would just move out of the way, maybe a laying down rebounding Welker would've had a shot.

Either way, it's ova, and people still have a hard time believing that Eli is....Elite

this would only work on 4th down though, if its 3rd they could just spike the ball and stop the clock

sorry but he's not "elite" if he backs it up with another probowl year than yeah...he wasn't even voted by the players in the top100 players of the year, 12 qbs taken ahead of him
I want my 5 seconds back for reading this thread.

Even on 4th you could spike it.

This is an amazing strategy. Up by 9 points they burn the time all the way to zero then just let them score on the free play game over you win by 3-2-1 it doesn't matter you win.

I did not watch the SB or any highlights. If this strategy was employed the NFL will have that fixed real quick. First the play never happened so no time is taken off, then maybe making it a stricter penalty inside of 2 mins or 4 mins.

So you do it until there's only time for one more play...

Huh?

Seriously, like the guy said above. Just spike the ball, 1 second off the clock, 5 yards. Move down the field.

This is the dumbest thread of the year.

This
his only strategy was to get lucky on forward progress. how one whistle changed everything
