April, 2005 - Mel Kiper Analysis of Alex Smith
1. San Francisco 49ers: Alex Smith (jr.), QB, Utah
The 49ers got a quarterback in Smith who is a proven winner and the smartest player in years to go from college to the NFL. He is extremely intelligent and understands schemes, and will be an extension of the offensive coordinator in the huddle. Smith is an accurate passer with good mobility -- he rushed for over 600 yards last season -- and once he fills out his frame to abou 225 pounds there won't really be a knock on him. He played in a complex scheme at Utah but was in the shotgun a lot, so adapting to being under center is probably his biggest concern right now. Still, the 49ers needed a quarterback to lead their rebuilding and become the face of the franchise and Smith fits the bill.

the Bears and Packers in the NFC title game---Alex needed offensive minds like McCarthy and Martz---if only the Niners had these minds on the team.
But now we have Harbaugh!!!!!!!

The way I remember it is he was beat out by JT O'Sullivan and Shaun Hill, whom I wish was still on our roster. I'd take Hill over Smith any day of the week in any type of offense. Smith just teases, whereas Hill actually delivers.

yes McCarthy and Martz are great offensive minds--but even they still need a QB that can execute on the field---Alex really couldn't.

When I watch Rodgers play, I get mad, not at Alex but our organization. We have been a 3rd rate run team for the last 7 years and that cannot be overlooked! Our owners have finally given us a chance with the hire of Jim but we cannot forget that they have repeatedly given us crap for HC's over the last 6 years.
All football teams get their idenity from the HC's. We've had no idenity over the last 6 years cause we are constantly switching HC's or OC's. How is a team supposed to make progress when nothing ever stays the same?
Its too easy and simple minded to put all the blame on Alex. I'm upset that things didn't work out but its very easy to see why things turned out the way they did. If people want to lay all the blame on Alex and can't put our crap ownership, HC'ing, lack of oline, no good wr's and average D then so be it. Alex will be gone no doubt and its time to move on.

What conversation? One guy is about to lead his team to the SuperBowl, while the other guy cant even lead his team out of the locker room.

THIS!!!!! All I know is that this weekend is filled with coaches who were successful (Martz, McCarthy) and once on our staff.... And a QB (Rodgers) who has intangibles that can't be coached who we should have picked!!! f**k Alex Smith... His name should no longer be mentioned anymore... LET THE HEALING BEGIN ONCE AND FOR ALL....
