Why would any HC with options (especially a Superbowl winning HC working for a team owned by a guy with deep pockets and a willingness to spend what it takes) want to work for Jed York? It would be one thing if the Niners gave complete control to Holmgren but I doubt Jed wants to give up any power.

The Yorks want a coach that will be grateful just to have the job. That kind of coach is more likely to kiss their ass and pretend that Jed and his buddy Praag bring valuable insight to football operations.


Holmgren would put an end to Jed's fantasy camp (where Jed pretends to be an experienced NFL executive). So unless Jed is ready to take a back seat and hand over control to Holmgren, the niners next HC will be yet another coach that nobody else wanted.

Totally agree.

It's possible, tho, that Holmgren's family situation could make him take a job he wouldn't otherwise. It's also possible that Jed might feel forced to back off a little in order to get a coach he really wants.

My thinking is that we will have to shoot for coaches that are more desperate, like you said. Guys I think might be good, but still desperate enough to come here, are Brian Billick and John Fox.
