I had a dream weeks ago that Ben Roethlisberger becomes a 49er. In the dream, I saw him in the uniform! Now it seems like its lining up to happen... Keep in mind I had a dream about us drafting Michael Crabtree (those who remember), and look what happened there. For the record, I do not want "Big Ben" to be a member of the San Francisco 49ers.

I don't really want big ben either, but I am excited to see how far we could get with a QB upgrade.

And if we pulled that off assuming we didnt trade smitty, we could trade smitty and get another draft pick.

We would probably trade smith, and like a 2nd rounder though..

Big Ben will be moved this week by the Rooneys, but not to SF.

Know your market (aka "read the room"). SF is a sophisticated, white collar market with a generally well-educated, season ticket-holder profile. Yes, the local markets leans to the liberal side, but forgiving blockheads (numerous screw-ups) isn't the same as forgiving a non-intrusive, single, juvenile act.

Michael Vick doesn't fit in this market, nor does Big Ben.

Where DOES Big Ben fit? How about a blue-collar, beer-swilling, cold-weather market with a down-trodden, poor-me, metropolitan attitude? Of Shefter's stated shopping list, that looks like Buffalo and Cleveland to me. I'm skeptical of Buffalo's supposed quick response of "no". Buffalo or Cleveland fans would hug Big Ben as one of their own.

Jacksonville needs Tebow to sell tickets, or if they move to LA, Big Ben is not a fit there. Oakland would have been a fit in the old days, but Al Davis is still mired in the "Russell is a great player, get over it" mode.

Singletary might be interested in a sniff of Big Ben, as he apparently was with Vick, but ownership has been very clear and consistent in regards to their projcted public image for the club - and Big Ben would clearly be a misfit on that front.

I don't disagree that Big Ben would be an immediate upgrade at the QB position for the Niners. I just don't see it happening for the reasons previously stated. The Yorks spend a mini-fortune every year in the SF Bay Area with carefully-crafted, image-driven, feel-good, charitable projects, that are the antithesis of what Roethlisberger (and Vick) represent. Getting a positive stadium outcome is probably the #1 issue on the minds of the Yorks until the June vote. Roethlisberger cannot win any games for the Nienrs before that vote. He can only sully their local image and endanger the vote.
