See my point?

Don't get me wrong, I am happy with our picks. But it could have been better.

NickBradley, have you seen Iupati on tape? He just throws people aside like rag dolls. He's incredible, you'll like him man for the next 12 years.

...AT IDAHO. Look at their '09 schedule:

at New Mexico State
at Washington
San Diego State
at Northern Illinois
Colorado State
at San Jose State
Hawaii
at Nevada
Louisiana Tech
Fresno State
at No. 6 Boise State
Utah State
vs. Bowling Green

So, Iupati TOSSED AROUND SCRUBS.

Seriously bro, you need to go be a fan of some other team. You are the kind of fan that doesn't deserve to rep the Red and Gold. You get on my nerves...

Who the hell are you? Because I thought we could have made a better pick I should be a fan of another team? What are you, 13?

The guy you stated that we should have picked would not have been a better pick and the Steelers would have took Iupati at 18. Why didn't they pick Baluga to play guard, the instead picked a Center and are switching him to guard.

Because Pouncey will eventually take over at center for the 32-year old they have now. And almost every scouting Report I've seen on pouncey says that he'd play G in the NFL until ready for C.

Furthermore, Pouncey was an all-american at guard before switching to Center.

And we drafted the best guard in the draft to play guard.

Happy with the picks...would have been happier with Bulaga -- maximizes the likelihood of a stud RT.

I'll admit I really REALLY wanted Bulaga. But I understand why Davis was the pick. Much higher ceiling player. I am still confused why we traded up for him though. Seems like a waste of a 4th round pick.

Did you see how quickly Miami traded OUT of their spot after we jumped over them?

They did it cause they are not solid across their Line and Davis is a stud. If they were after someone else or they thought they could get a better offer(they could have since they went WAY down) they would have sat on it til at least the 3 minute mark was left on the clock. But soon as we jumped over them they pulled the trigger. They wanted Davis. Mark my words on that. They wanted him and instead we got him. I'd waste a 3rd rounder for that kind of reaction any day of the year. That was EPIC.

~Ceadder

That was my assumption. It was REALLY quick. And knowing now how for Bulaga fell, it's obvious that Davis was the better pick.

exactly! miami wanted davis

Miami didn't want Davis. They wanted to recoup that 2nd rounder they lost when they traded for Marshall.

I'm convinced Davis would have been there at 17 and may have fallen past Buluga in GB. Other than Pittsburgh there really wasn't any teams looking for OL.

With your knowledge of the other nfl teams draft boards could you enlighten us who might be available at our next pick?

Seriously you have no f**king idea how nfl scouts actually viewed him. What I do know is that both Denver and Miami were actively trying to trade down and that Davis was the player the Niners were targeting and really wanted.

That's not a knock on the pick or the trade up I'm just stating it was unnecessary. You don't need to have an advanced knowledge of other teams draft boards to know that, and you don't need to know how scouts viewed him either. All you need is a little hindsight and the ability to put 2 and 2 together. There wasn't a market for tackles after the run between 6-10, and Philly and San Diego were the teams looking to go up. Neither one of them cared for a tackle.

Tell me the teams that could desired him at 11? Pittsburgh and that's it.

You were right about one thing. The Dolphins weren't interested in Davis. The rest of your argument about the trade up being unnecessary is debatable.

What do we know now? Both the Dolphins and the Broncos wanted to move down and get more picks. There were at least two teams that were interested in getting a tackle (the Cowboys, the Packers, and maybe the Steelers) like Davis. The Niners just made an aggressive move that didn't cost much to guarantee they got the guy they wanted.

The Steelers got more value w/ Pouncey than they would have with Iupati. They have a potential Center AND a Potential Guard. I read this morning that Pouncey is expected to start at Guard as a rookie.

I believe the 49ers heard the Fins were trading down, but didn't know with WHO. So they jumped to be safe.

We didn't need value after taking an OT at 11, we needed a guard and we got one, the best one.

i think he is serious, this is the webzone haha. only nolan would pass on the best guard in the draft to grab a tackle to convert into a guard. we have staley signed long term and davis was just drafted as a 20 year old, were set at both tackle spots for the next decade. we needed a guard, we got the best available, how is that hard to understand?

Nobody seems to be acknowledging the fact that no 'conversion' is needed: Davis and Bulaga are both OT/OGs -- they played both positions in college.

What taking two OTs does is ensure that you have a dominant OT out of this draft...with the other one playing guard. Playing guard is easy.
nvm

Ask David Bass and Chilo if it is easy.

What you don't seem to understand is that we have no reason to believe that Bulaga would've been very good at guard.

Could he play it? Sure. Could he play it as well as we Iupati? Not a chance.

Iupati is an immensely talented guard. Bulaga is a tackle that could probably be a decent guard. Especially after drafting a tackle that the team believes will succeed at the position, there was absolutely NO REASON to take Bulaga over Iupati.

Understand?

Should have caveated: playing guary is easy if you're a tackle. Perhaps the only exceptions are extremely athletic OTs, like a Charles Brown.

Assuming Anthony Davis does NOT bust, what would happen if Bulaga feels that he can be a legit NFL OT and wants legit OT money when he comes due for a new contract . . . but he is stuck at OG because we have no other position to place him?

Understand?

Probabilistically, you increase your chances of success at offensive tackle, and OTs are reasonably expected to play guard if asked (especially true since Davis and Bulaga both played guard).

Look at the math:

Assume a first-round OT has a 2/3 chance of becoming a quality OT and a 3/4 chance of becoming a quality OG.

By getting two OTs, your chances of getting a quality starting OT go up to 8/9ths and your chances of getting a quality guard go up to 15/16ths.

With the strategy we have, you only have a 2/3rds chance of getting a quality tackle instead of 8/9ths, and our guard position still has a 3/4ths chance of succeeding.

Getting two OTs is the risk-adverse strategy.

The same logic applies to inside LBs in a 3-4. If you drafted two ILBs in the first round, at least one should be able to succeed at 'Mike' and the less capable one should be able to play 'Ted'.

Same logic applies for the secondary as well.

Most on the webzone can't understand this. Most probably think that the more times you flip a coin, the more likely you are to get a certain result.
