To add, who knows how he was coached in college. If he was mainly coached to play the ball carrier and not the ball, then he probably didn't work on staying low to act more like a CB more than a LB. Seems to me they wanted him to be a LB who can run a 4.3 forty back there and not a FS who can run a 4.3 forty.

If he wasn't trained properly to be a ball hawk, then the outlook on him is very promising because he has the speed to play the position.

The speed is a HUGE plus on his development.

I completely agree with you and I think the 49ers will put Lewis on IR and sign Mark Roman if they feel Reggie Smith, Curtis Taylor, and Taylor Mays are not ready to start.

I still have high hopes for Reggie. Maybe he'll come around this year.

I agree, I think that's why they used a 2nd round pick on Mays.

Pretty fair video of Mays at USC. He completely blew a few coverages. He's great running sideline to sideline in pursuit(the Jahvid Best play really sticks out for this, not many NFL safeties could have made that play). Struggled a few times with basic tackling techniques, doesn't wrap up, head down(completely whiffs vs Anthony Miller TWICE). Often times is just too upright on tackles, which could just be laziness. Against UCLA he comes in way too upright and gets stiff-armed for another 5 yards. At times didn't take on blockers with much effort and instead just would try to run around them.

Too often he just gives away extra yardage because he doesn't wrap up on tackles. Against Notre Dame, he gives up a TD because he doesn't wrap up and the WR just simply bounces off of him into the end zone.

His speed really shows up when he can run in a straight line. Sideline to sideline he has just amazing ability. Although when he has to change directions, he seems to really struggle. He doesn't break down in space very well. And several times on deep passes over the middle he is out of position and completely misplays the WR.

You know he'd get flagged every time in the NFL for that though. Going airborn against a defenseless WR is pretty automatic. Probably would be a fine as well.

Not that I hate Mike Iupati but I would have been happier if Earl Thomas fell to us at #17 and we could have had him instead of drafting Blown Coverage the sidekick of Missed Tackles.

I dont watch college ball, but that video of his "high/low lights" doesn't do him any justice. If thats all I had to judge him on, I dont even know that I would draft him. The tackling can be fixed because he has heart, but I'm skeptical he has the instincts to play in the NFL.

What I dont like:

1. At times he looks lost in coverage. Did he put any time in film study?

2. Too many "big hits" result in him falling down and his guy picking up additional yards after contact.

3. His anticipation of what a player is going to do seems way off. In that video their are a few scense that he completly takes himself out of the play. He zags way right way before for he has to, he almost would be better off standing still.

Was he the BPA when he was drafted?

he really needs to work on his coverage skills luckily he has really good work ethic my personal opinion is that we shouldnt start him till next year so he has 1 year of pure coaching then i believe he will be an excellent SS

he has the size and speed and from the highlights he seems to be excellent against the run

Channeling Al Davis there? Darius Heyward-Bey, Fabian Washington, Carlos Francis, Teyo Johnson.

Speed is great, but everyone in the NFL is fast. There isn't that huge dropoff that you might see from one college program to the next. I'll take the football player over the track star any day.

because seattle took earl thomas from us Taylor had to be the best saftey at the time. ´ither that or we grab Mikes future son in law from the rams. Hey its better than another year of roman and plus Taylor is Ronies Boy!
