EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — The 49ers’ defense had a rough day against the Los Angeles Chargers’ first-team offense Tuesday, but defensive lineman Osa Odighizuwa was a bright spot.Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert sliced and diced up the secondary with multiple deep passes throughout 11-on-11 work, but the defensive line, led by Odighizuwa, quietly showed their potential during the joint practice.
Defenders are not allowed to hit or tackle quarterbacks during practice, but Odighizuwa made his way into the backfield for a “sack” on multiple occasions. The veteran was getting so many pressures that several people on the sidelines asked who was wearing No. 92.
Fred Warner, who lines up behind Odighizuwa, has noticed the lineman’s steady improvement.
“Osa, it seems like he just keeps getting better and better,” Warner said. “I love the mindset, the tenacity, the physicality that he brings to the position and to our defense. Know how important it is to get pressure on the quarterback and in the run game, I think he’s going to keep getting better as we keep going.”
