The San Francisco 49ers have dealt with a long list of injuries this season but remain undefeated at 5-0 after extending their winning streak with a 32-29 victory over the NFC West rival Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.
The 49ers have established themselves as one of the NFL's top contenders, once again showing they can overcome adversity. But is their current roster strong enough to compete for a championship? That remains to be seen.
Bleacher Report analyst Alex Kay examined the NFL landscape and proposed a trade for six contenders that would put them "over the top," including a move to address one of the 49ers' most injury-plagued positions: wide receiver.
Kay linked San Francisco to Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr., who could benefit from a change of scenery.
This isn't the first time Kay has floated the possibility of Thomas joining the 49ers. He previously explored the scenario in September, ahead of Week 4. This time, however, Kay estimates it would cost San Francisco a second-round draft pick in 2027 to acquire the wideout.
That might seem steep for a player who has struggled to replicate his 2024 rookie-season production. However, Kay believes the 49ers' receiving corps could be approaching a point of desperation for additional help.
"San Francisco wideouts appear to be cursed in 2026," Kay wrote. "Deebo Samuel became the latest to pick up an injury designation after straining his hamstring in a thrilling 32-29 win over the rival Seattle Seahawks. With Samuel reportedly set to be sidelined for several weeks, the team has to consider a blockbuster deal to stay afloat."
Thomas (6-2, 209) made an immediate impact in 2024, recording 87 receptions for 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns to earn a Pro Bowl selection as a rookie.
Since that rookie campaign, he has caught 57 passes for 812 yards and three touchdowns in 19 games. His yards per reception have also dropped from 14.7 yards per catch across his first two NFL seasons (2024–2025) to 11.7 in 2026.
"Head coach Kyle Shanahan's innovative offensive scheming has helped rehabilitate the careers of several other veteran cast-offs, a group Thomas could join if he lands in San Francisco," Kay added. "Thomas' rookie performance showed he has a superstar ceiling and, at the age of just 24, there is still plenty of time for him to get back on track.
"Considering Thomas fits both the immediate and long-term plans of an organization looking to finally win a Super Bowl under Shanahan, surrendering a Day 2 pick is a worthwhile investment. If BTJ hits the ground running in San Francisco, the 49ers not only gain an immediate difference-maker capable of fueling a playoff run, but also secure their future No. 1 wide receiver in the process."
