Two weeks in, rookie Trey Lance, who was taken third overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, has played in a total of four snaps after not seeing the field in Week 2 against the Eagles. Lance has mainly served as the scout team quarterback in practice, especially before Week 2 as the team prepared for mobile quarterback Jalen Hurts. With not much live action in games, most of Lance's improvements come from behind the scenes, which head coach Kyle Shanahan acknowledged during an interview with NBC Sports. "I think the biggest thing for Trey and any rookie quarterback, especially him coming from a smaller school, not playing in over a year, is just seeing the week-to-week process of what an NFL season is like," Shanahan told NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco.

The San Francisco 49ers have officially announced the signing of running back Jacques Patrick from the Cincinnati Bengals practice squad to a one-year deal. The Niners also released cornerback Dee Virgin from their own practice squad. News of Patrick's signing was first reported earlier today by NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. The 49ers Communication staff provided the following rundown. Patrick (6-2, 231) originally entered the NFL after signing with the Cincinnati Bengals on April 17, 2020. Could there still be a reunion between the San Francisco 49ers and cornerback Richard Sherman this season? The team will never dismiss any possibility, but right now, it seems to be content with its current cornerback situation. Sherman's offseason incident does complicate things. In a conversation with USA Today's Doug Farrar, the five-time Pro Bowler and three-time first-team All-Pro said the situation is ongoing.
