Dallas Stars hire Glen Gulutzan as their new head coach!!
I really like this move, he has been coaching the Texas Stars the last two years so he is familiar with the organization, and there won't be a total reboot of the system. He is credited with grooming young players like Jamie Benn, and Tomas Vincour while they were on the AHL team. Good hire, glad to see some new blood behind the bench.
I don't know if it will be a good hire. But I'm glad to bring in a coach that preaches a two-way game. Good solid defensive work is key to building a competitor, and I thought we've been lacking that big time under Crawford.
But Crawford was a disaster hire. Like I've said earlier, I'm really not sold on Nieuwendyk as the GM. It will be interesting what he does with the roster and how Gulutzan has the lineup. Is Benn going to make a permanent shift to Center? I think he will have to with Richards gone.
Not counting FA signings, my guess on the top 3 forward lines:
Morrow- Ribiero - Ott
Eriksson - Benn - Glennie
Burrish - Wandell - Vincour
New forward lines:
Morrow - Ribiero - Ryder
Eriksson - Benn - Glennie
Ott - Fiddler - Burish
Dowell - Wandell - Vincour
First to get called up: Barch, Peterson
D:
Robidas - Goligoski
Daley - Souray
Grossman - Pardy
First to get called up: Fistric, Larsen
G: Lehtonen, Raycroft
Glennie is probably a tough spot to call, but I'm hoping he can make it to the NHL roster. Pardy played for our coach in the past and I think is a tad bit better than Fistric. Souray was probably mostly a pickup for our PP, and Fiddler was a big pick up for his defensive game and PK. Our 3rd line will be nasty to play against.
Overall, I am very satisfied with how yesterday went, Joe made some solid signings that will make this a better overall team. Each player we got addressed an important need and its the role players like Fiddler, Dowell, and Dvorak that usually make the biggest impact between winning and losing games. I know none of those guys are going to be superstars, and take us to a cup, but they are the "meat and potatos" type players that give a team that extra depth which is vital in today's NHL.
As far as Glennie goes, you are definetely much more optimistic than I am about him being NHL ready. I think he is at least a year away, and I expect him to spend some time in the AHL before he tries to make that jump from Juniors to the NHL. However, he will have an oppurtunity to show what he's got during training camp, maybe he will suprise me. I remember when most people thought Jamie Benn wasn't NHL ready, until he dominated training camp and preseason.
With that said, here are may "way too early" projected lines
Morrow-Ribs-Ryder (This line will definetely lead the league in dangles)
Ericsson-Ott-Benn (Benn is better as a wing, and I believe Ott can be a #2 center, great FO)
Vincour-Fiddler-Burish
Dowell- Wandell- Dvorak
Robidas/Goligoski
Grossman/Souray
Daley/Pardy
...How long til the NHL season begins?

Good signing for us. He definitely fills a need. We also signed Peter Budaj to backup Price.

Yeah, there was a lot of rumors that they would be BIG players in the free agent frenzy too. Burke was catching a little heat from some of the TSN broadcasters about being in Afghanistan visiting the Canadian troops instead of at work trying to make deals. They weren't saying what he was doing was wrong, just that he could have pickey ANY other day in the year to do that. But yea, Leafs fans have to be upset.

Here is a comment about Scott Glennie from the Stars Development Camp going on this weekend:
Stars Director of Scouting and Player Development Les Jackson talked briefly with the media today. Here’s a quote on forward Scott Glennie, the team’s first round pick (8th overall) in 2009:
“Like a lot of young guys there are bumps along the way and it’s educating him on the different lessons he has to go through. I think the experience he had last with Texas (AHL) at the end of the year was invaluable," Jackson said. "We’ll bring him to camp, but he’ll likely start in Texas. He needs that experience. We’ll probably keep him at center ice. It’s kind of a new position for him, he’s only been there one year. I saw him play a lot last year and I liked what I’ve seen. He’s making advancements.”
Glennie has been training with Gary Roberts, the team’s player development consultant. Roberts currently is at the development camp.

don't get too high on Cole yet. He's a solid player but you definitely overpaid him. I think he'll disappoint Montreal

ehhh it all about if their big time players show up unlike last yr, i still think a healthy pens, bruins or flyers team can shut down their offense which is clearly their strength

didnt they have to spend a boat load just to meet the salary floor? thats the impression i was under, which means they probably overpaid a few players on purpose

gonna try to get back into hockey this season...havent been a fan since the strike...use to be a HUGE Avs fan...they seem to have alot of good youth so im intrigued
they arent all that.
Young talent
but
I think they are about to overspend in Free Agency because they need to reach the Cap Floor.
hopefully its on a goalie
You guys were saying? Varlomov's rights traded to Colorado: http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=568023&navid=mod-rr-headlines
really retarded deal on their end
and yes they will overspend to keep Varlomov because Varlomov is rumored to be going to the KHL for the $$$$$
and
he still may have issues with his knee
I agree HORRIBLE move by Colorado, they gave up way too much. I'm not sure who the Avs GM is but some of his moves have been questionable of late, epecially when you go back to the trade deadline and see him move future stars like Chris Stewart, Kevin Shattenkirk, and established vet Wojtek Wolski.
they signed him
two year deal
I just think it is a gamble to give up a first rounder in the 2012 draft and a second rounder in 2012-2013 for a guy that has never won anything in this league, and has never even been a hands down #1 goalie. Varmolov has potential and has shown flashes of being a great goalie in this league, but that is a lot to give up.
i dont mind it as long as he performs...goalie is the most important position on the ice and sometimes you have to over spend to get the guy you want. from what ive read on him he has all the tools to be an elite goalie and is still very young..hopefully can stay healthy

If he plays elite, well then it could wind up being worth it. But I'm not sure he's going to have enough help around him. In the end, this is a huge risk. High risk with uncertain reward.
