2009 Oakland A's thread

Sweeney went from 6/30-8/6 without a HR, a span of 32 games.

He had only six XHBs during that span too, all 2Bs.

Now he hits 2 HRs in this series with KC and Kaufmann is a pitcher friendly park so you have to really hit it solid hit one out and both of Sweeney's were no doubt abouters especially that first one in the series opener.

Sweeney definitely has the power, all his HRs this season, 5 so far, has been crushed, problem is it's a rare occurrence...maybe because of his swing as many feel he doesn't use his lower body enough to pull the ball more and his inside out swing makes it more likely that he shoots singles up the middle and to LF as I think most of his hits have been to the LF-L/CF.

I do hope he learns how to adjust his swing because at this point, his power isn't there and he even only has 15 2Bs.

If he could finally find that power that Thomas/M.Sweeney said he had back that most A's fans remember reading in the chron in mid 08, then I think he not only could be a very good AVG hitter as he's been so far thru about two years into his A's career where he was a .300 hitter for most of 08 and has since the start of last month had an AVG over .270...but he could also at least be one who could hit 30 2Bs and 10-15 HRs at least.

But until then, he is what he is which is a 6'4" 220 lbs slap hitter who at this point is a 4th OF for a lot of teams.
Nice win today.

TV guys said it right, A's played both big and small ball today with 4 HRs and 3 more SBs.

Anderson pitched great for 6 but looked gassed in that hot/humid weather in KC.

Funny now that I expect to win every start now by Anderson and Gio has another good outing tomorrow, feel the same way about him.

I feel almost the complete 180 with Cahill and Mazzaro though and if you told me I'd feel that way maybe 5 or 6 weeks ago with Cahill/Gio...would've thought it was a joke.
Carter with another multi hit game and a HR.

.531/.628/.10.63 in AUG.

Promote the guy already to AAA!

He's been absolutely AMAZING the past 5-6 weeks.

I wonder what they're waiting for...?
I don't know?

The guy is just killing it at AA right now that seems logical to promote him to AAA which is where he'll most likely play most of 2010 at.

The consensus for a lot of A's fans is to play Carter one level at a time each year so why not let him spend the remainder of this year at AA.

I and some A's fans think why not let him have a head start at AAA and let him get used to the transition for a month plus. Those who argue against is what if Carter struggles the last month at AAA and comes off the season on a bad note after a HUGE AA season so far where he's among the league leaders in AVG, OBP, SLG, HRs....why not let hi dominate possibly the rest of the year at AA and go into the offseason feeling good about himself.

I could see that argument but I still remain in the camp where I'd like to promote him to AAA.
Wallace from last night went 1/2 with a HR and two BBs.

Much needed game for him as he'd been struggling bad the past handful of games.
Reports are that the Nomar maybe heading off to PHI.

Seems as PHI is interested, they were interested in signing him the previous offseason...and I'd personally would like to see Nomar shipped off to a contending team in what could be one last hurrah for him.

Makes sense. He's got nothing to prove to us.
Capra with a dominant performance at A+ SUN.

7 IP, 2 hits, 0 ERs, BB, 10 Ks.

30 Ks/12 BBs in 22.2 IP in his four starts at A+ and a 133 Ks/52 BBs ratio in 122.2 IP for the season at A and A+ ball.

He isn't a flame thrower so find it surprising that he's K'ing a lot of guys.

Wasn't a fan of the pick when it was made in 08 but so far, the early returns look very good.
Gio dealing as A's up are 5-0 but there is a delay.

BAL does have 2nd and 3rd with no outs to lead off the 7th but if the game resumes, pretty good chance Gio is done.
Oh yeah, Carter hits another HR.

I don't know what to say about Carter. The guy just has been unbelievable and can't see how he can't be after this season not be a top 50 prospect at least.

22 year old whos just dominating AA the way he has. His #s have actually improved each month this season.

Not counting today's game...

-.334/.432/.568 with 38 2Bs/2 3Bs/20 HRs/87 RBIs 73 BBs/104 Ks, 12/16 on SBs

...and still got a month or so left to the season down in the TEX league.
Still wondering why Desme is still at A+.

So far this month...

-.379/.395/.690 with 2B/3B/2 HRs/8 RBIs 4BBs/6 Ks and is 5/5 on SBs

...he has nothing to prove at A+ anymore. People make so much about his age but he's actually a year younger than Brown whos at AA.

And comparing their #s at AA at the same age, Desme blows past what Brown did last year.
I think it's becasue with Peterson, Brown, Sulentic and Spencer there are a lot of outfielders and not a lot of space.

Personally, I think Carter and Spencer should both be called up to AAA and Desme should be called up to AA.
