for one, he'll be relegated to DH duty next season. No one's gonna want him at 1B. Second, his hitting this year stunk. He doesn't have the same bat speed that he did back in THOSE days. His hips are too tight, his back is aging, and his legs are slow.
he keeps trying to pull the ball to hit homers.

I agree. I just dont see a team signing Giambi after this year. He is done.

Mazzaro with his best outing since his 6/10 start against TB albeit it still wasn't a great start but at least he got his 3rd win, after he started his career off with two wins and has either had losses or no decisions.
He should have at least 1 or 2 more wins or a couple of lesser losses due to him getting rotten run support early on in his A's career when he arrived in early June.
Mortenson the kid we got from STL in the Holliday deal is making his A's debut tomorrow taking the spot for Braden.

Looking at the minors.
Carter and Weeks continue to destroy AA.
Wallace hitting a rough patch at AAA. 0 for his last 9 and is AVG is down to .250.
Peterson the kid we got from STL in the Holliday deal is doing very well at AA. .339/.397/.536 for the season and is hitting .389 past ten games. In fact the A's hitting talent at this point is at AA with Carter, Weeks, Donaldson, Spencer and Peterson now. Cardenas just got promoted although he's been struggling bad since being promoted to AAA, 1/18 although he was struggling bad the last 3-4 weeks at AA too.
I'd hope Desme would be promoted to AA soon.

Looks as Springer is gonna get dealt.
Don't know for who but word is he's gone.
Springer #s on the surface don't look all that great but he had three straight horrific relief appearances in late May where he got tattooed for 8 ERs/10 hits in 2 IP.
The rest of the season, he's been pretty good...
-44 GP, 39.2 IP, 42 hits, 11 ERs, 12 BBs, 44 Ks, 2.53 ERA, 1.36 WHIP
Hope we get something solid in return for him.
He'd be a very nice veteran piece to a playoff team's pen.

Slusser reporting the Rays.
Surprised that it wasn't an NL team like STL or LAD.

No deal.
A's let him go on waviers, TB picked him up, and A's didn't pull him back so no deal.

A's did save a million in letting Springer go to TB.
They saved 4 million from the Holliday deal.
Probably got some money from MIN too.
Now sign Green, Stassi, and Krol...maybe Dyson if they're really committed.

Bad loss yesterday.
Looked as the A's had Grienke on the ropes and just couldn't knock him out.
Mortenson looked good for two innings, well, don't need to go further about that.
Congrats to Everidge for first career HR, he's been doing very well and put up the best 1B #s the A's have seen in a while. Course the league hasn't had a book on him but even so, I think he could be at least a solid backup 1B/DH type heading into next decade.

Oh yeah, seems as the Oakland Coliseum name lasted for just over 4+ months.
Verizon is close to signing a 5 year deal for the naming rights to the venue.
Verizon Coliseum.

Some minor league notes...
-Desme with another great game. 2/3 with another 2 SBs. Well on his way to a 30/40 season, pretty impressive for a guy making his minor league debut really albeit he's still old for the level he's played at with him being 23 and at A+.
-Coleman who had been toiling away at A ball after a great first two months and then bad two months where he had only 4 XHBs, well he's doing very well it at A+ right now where he's matched his June/July XHBs total thru six games. Have no idea why the A's waited so long to promote him anyways.
-Carter with another hit to extend his hitting streak to like 20, also had a pair of BBs.
-C.Brown who had missed a month has come back swing well in his two games in his return so far. 3/9 with 3 runs, 2B, 3B, HR, 3 RBIs

Sweeney has shown a lil power of late. As we've discussed previously, it's the one missing aspect of his game. His glove is sick, the dude makes contact...just doesn't display the power. You'd expect more from a 6'4 215-220lb frame.
