It's not even about being the 2nd best or whatever at a position. It seems like most good to very good players become the highest paid at their position just because.
Jimmy G wasn't the best QB yet was the highest paid at one pt. Nate Solder was never the best LT in football but was the highest paid at one pt.
That said you HAVE to give Buck big money. He constant and is reliable. He won't get paid as much as AD but he's gonna get paid a ton.
Great thing is he's already on the books for 2020. So his contract isn't gonna affect much next yr.
I just don't see the need to address his contract this offseason. Why now? Because the market for interior, non-pass rush OL eaters is gonna go nuts? Who cares? We have TONS of future money.
The issue is 2020 cap. And Buckner is already accounted for. Moreover, we have multiple years of control on him. If he is steady and uninjured then it makes using the franchise tags a no brainer.
Buckner is not a 2020 issue. Armstead is the most immediate issue.
Kittle is an immediate issue as well -- but he will have a comparatively smaller cap number -- even if he gets record TE money.
